With 12 new tiles, this little gem mixes perfectly with the base game, bringing a touch of navigation to your routes. Each new tile comes with road segments and, coolest of all, two of three possible signposts: left turn, right turn, or straight. The magic happens when scoring roads: if a road with a signpost is completed, you check the adjacent tile. If the path on this new tile matches what the signpost indicates (like, the signpost says turn right, and the road on the next tile also goes right), the signpost scores! And there's more: the more types of signposts you score on the same road, the more valuable they become. Scoring one type is worth 1 point per signpost, two types are worth 2 points, and if you manage all three types on a single road... well, that's a party, worth 3 points each! To add that final touch, at the end of the game, signposts on unfinished roads that still point in the correct direction are worth 1 point each. It's a small expansion, but it adds a very interesting strategic layer without overcomplicating the gameplay we already love. Perfect for those who want to level up their Carcassonne games without having to learn a bunch of new rules. ## How to Play Game Objective In this Carcassonne mini-expansion, you can receive extra points when scoring a road. To do this, you must direct the course of the road according to the signposts. Preparation (Setup) Shuffle the 12 terrain tiles from this mini-expansion together with the terrain tiles from the base game. This expansion was developed for the Carcassonne base game, and its rules still apply. You can combine "The Signposts" with other expansions; however, there will be no official rules for these combinations. The expansion content includes 12 new terrain tiles, each representing 2 of the 3 different types of signposts: left, straight, and right. Game Flow The game follows the rules of the Carcassonne base game. The actions in a turn are: Place a tile: Draw a terrain tile and place it according to the base game rules. Place a meeple: You can place a meeple on the tile you just placed. Score points: When completing a road, check for nearby signposts. If so, in addition to the points for the road, you also score points for each signpost pointing in the correct direction. Actions and How to Play Place a tile Refer to the manual for details on this section. Place a meeple Refer to the manual for details on this section. Score points When a road is completed, you check the adjacent signposts. For a signpost to be pointing in the correct direction, the following requirements must be met: The course of the road on the next tile must follow the direction indicated by the signpost (left turn, right turn, or straight). The roads must not end on the first tile after the signpost. If a signpost points to one of the two directions of a roundabout, it is showing the correct course of the road. Scoring for signposts is done as follows: Count the signposts that show the correct course of the road on the road you want to score. Now, count how many different types of signposts are pointing in the correct direction on your road. Extra points are awarded based on the different types of correct signposts: Only 1 type of signpost: 1 point for each correct signpost. 2 different types of signposts: 2 points for each correct signpost. All 3 different types of signposts: 3 points for each correct signpost. Signposts that do not show the correct course of the road do not score. End of Game and Scoring Refer to the manual for details on this section. At the end of the game, you receive 1 point for each signpost on your roads that points in the correct direction. The different types of signposts do not matter at this point. Tips for Winning Direct the course of the road according to the signposts to receive extra points. Try to include different types of signposts in your roads to maximize extra points (up to 3 points per signpost). ## FAQ ### Do I need the Carcassonne base game to play? Absolutely! This is an expansion, so the Carcassonne base game is essential to use the new tiles and rules. ### How many players does this expansion support? It maintains the player count of the base game, which is 2 to 5 players. ### Does it significantly increase the game's complexity? No, it's a very light expansion. It adds an extra tactical layer with the signposts, but the rules are easy to grasp and don't change the main flow of Carcassonne. ### How much playtime does it add? Being small and having straightforward rules, the added playtime is minimal, keeping the original duration of 30-45 minutes. ### Is it worth it for someone who already has many Carcassonne expansions? If you enjoy adding small strategic variations without much complication, yes! It focuses on a specific aspect (roads and directions) and can be an interesting addition to your collection. ### How do the signposts work in practice? When a road with a signpost is scored, you look at the adjacent tile. If the road on that new tile follows the direction indicated by the signpost (left, right, or straight), the signpost scores. Scoring more types of signposts on the same road increases their value.
