Ready to defy the law and become the legend of Chicago? ## How to Play Game Objective In Chicago Dry, Prohibition has transformed America into a stage for secret transgressions. Your objective is to circumvent these restrictions, distributing "bottled fun" to Chicago's hidden bars and becoming the most important and prosperous Prohibition-era Mafioso. You must occupy and dispute the districts of downtown Chicago, aiming for the score of each district. Each round, you will use the favors of a character to distribute drinks and win influence disputes against rival mafia groups, while trying to circumvent the difficulties imposed by the law. The player who obtains the highest number of points on the score track at the end of the game wins and becomes Chicago's greatest gangster. Preparation (Setup) Unfold and place the game board in the center of the table. Secretly, draw one Scoring Tile for each of the 9 districts on the map on the game board and place it with the Winter side facing up. The remaining tiles should be stored in the box. Observe on the Scoring Tiles which borders between the districts will be closed during the game. In the upper right corner of each district scoring tile there is a symbol (triangle, circle, or hexagon). See which one is most repeated and block the corresponding borders on the game board with the Barriers. In case of a tie in the number of symbols: the triangle has priority over the circle; the circle, over the hexagon; and the hexagon, over the triangle. If the tie persists, randomly draw the symbol of the border that will be blocked. Place the 5 Character tokens in the corresponding space on the game board in the indicated numerical order. It is recommended that in the first few games, all tokens be used on side A. Place 3 Character Position Tokens (which move throughout the game) in the corresponding districts on the game board. Remember that the Thug position token and the Paperboy position token are not played in the same game, as the Thug and the Paperboy share the character token (side A being the Thug and side B the Paperboy). Use the character position tokens according to the chosen side of the token. Place the Scoring Modifier (-1 or +1) on top of the corresponding character token (Police Officer and Jazzman). If the character tokens are using side B, these modifiers will NOT be used and should be stored in the game box. Each player chooses a color and receives the Truck Board, the 16 Drink Pieces, the Delivery Truck, the Gangster Piece, and the Order Marker of the chosen color. The Gangster Piece must be placed on the score track around the game board in the starting space (00 points). The Truck Board must be positioned on the Winter side, where 6 drink slots are marked on the truck bed. Shuffle the players' Order Markers and place them randomly on the Order Board, shown on the game board. For games with 2 or 3 players, place the Mini-Order Board over the Order Board on the game board, with the side corresponding to the number of players facing up. Following the order established in the previous item, each player must place their Delivery Truck in a district of their choice. Immediately, place two value 1 drinks (Bottle) in the same district as the Truck. The only restriction is the district where the Police position token is located, where no delivery or placement of drinks can be made. The remaining drink pieces must be placed in the corresponding spaces on the truck bed in the Winter position (3 Bottles, 2 Carboys, and 1 Barrel). The other drinks must be left next to the game board; they will be used in the second phase of the game (Summer). Game Flow A game of Chicago Dry lasts two periods: Winter and Summer. Winter consists of 3 game rounds, and Summer consists of 4 rounds. At the end of each of these periods (Winter and Summer), points are scored according to the current situation on the game board. Each of these 7 rounds (3 in Winter and 4 in Summer) is composed of two phases: the character selection phase and the action phase. Character Selection Phase Character selection is the opening phase of a round. By choosing a character, you are, in fact, choosing to use the favors of this character this round. The selection phase has the following steps: STEP 1. If the Police Officer and/or the Jazzman are being used on side A of their tokens, place a -1 (Police Officer) and/or +1 (Jazzman) modifier on the corresponding tokens. STEP 2. Following the order established in preparation, each player chooses a character by taking their corresponding token. If there is any modifier (+1 or -1) on the token, it must also be taken by the player. Note: it is possible to have more than one modifier of the same type on the character token. STEP 3. Update the order of the markers on the round's order board. Move the markers to the correct position, ordering by the chosen character's number from smallest to largest. The Scoring Modifiers on the Police Officer's and Jazzman's tokens accumulate if they are not chosen. That is, if there is already a Modifier on one of them and no one chooses them, in the next round the character token will gain another Modifier, accumulating its values successively. Action Phase The action phase is divided into two steps: character action and drink delivery action. These two steps can be performed in any order, without preference. The only condition is that the player must completely finish one of the steps before starting the next. After performing your two actions ("Character Action" and "Drink Delivery Action"), move your marker on the round's order board to the same position in the first column, indicating that your turn is complete and it is now the next player's Action Phase. When all order markers are in the first column, the round ends. Players return the character tokens to the game board and start a new round. Actions and How to Play The actions are divided into Character Action and Drink Delivery. 1. Character Action The characters chosen in the Character Selection phase allow several different actions, which must be activated obligatorily in the action phase and performed before or after drink delivery. Each character token has two distinct sides (A and B), with different powers on each side. In some cases, such as the Thug/Paperboy and Mayor/Driver, the characters on each side are also distinct. List of Characters and Abilities (Side A) Police (Side A): Move the Police position token up to two adjacent districts, and place the Scoring Modifiers collected with the Police Officer token during the Character Selection phase either in the departure district or the arrival district of the Police position token (but never in the passing district). The Police block the delivery and movement of drinks in the district where their position token is located, and allow the player controlling the police to ignore the barriers between districts. Thug (Side A): Move the Thug position token up to two adjacent districts, respecting the barriers and the Police position token. In the district where the Thug token ends its movement, expel up to two opponent drinks (of any value) to adjacent districts. When expelling opponent drinks, remember to respect the barriers and the Police position token. Speakeasy Queen (Side A): Move up to two of your drinks (of any value and from any district) to any district of your choice. The drinks do not need to leave the same district and do not need to have the same destination. No drink can be moved into a district (enter/deliver, leave, or pass through) blocked by the Police token, but the Speakeasy Queen ignores barrier limitations. Jazzman (Side A): Move the Jazzman position token up to two adjacent districts. The Scoring Modifiers collected with the Jazzman token during the Character Selection phase must be placed either in the departure district or the arrival district, but never in the passing district of the Jazzman position token. Mayor (Side A): Immediately receive 1 victory point on the score track. With the Mayor, you can ignore any barrier and also ignore the blocking of the Police position token to deliver your drinks this round. Even if you choose not to use the Mayor's ignore ability, you will immediately receive 1 victory point on the score track. List of Characters and Abilities (Side B) Police (Side B): Move the Police position token up to two adjacent districts. At the end of this round, the player with the most influence in the district where the Police position token is located immediately loses 2 victory points on the score track. In case of a tie, all tied players lose 2 victory points on the score track. The Police block the delivery and movement of drinks in the district where their position token is located, and allow the player controlling the police to ignore the barriers between districts. Paperboy (Side B): Move the Paperboy position token up to two adjacent districts, respecting the barriers and the Police position token. In the district where the Paperboy position token ends its movement, attract up to two opponent drinks (of any value) and/or your own from adjacent districts. When attracting opponent or your own drinks, remember to respect the barriers and the Police position token. Speakeasy Queen (Side B): Divide three movements among your drinks (of any value and from any district) to any adjacent district. The drinks do not need to leave the same district and do not need to have the same destination. You can perform one movement with three different drinks, three movements with a single drink, or divide between two drinks. No drink can be moved into a district (enter/deliver, leave, or pass through) blocked by the Police token, but the Speakeasy Queen ignores barrier limitations. Jazzman (Side B): Move the Jazzman position token up to two adjacent districts. At the end of this round, the player with the most influence in the district where the Jazzman position token is located immediately gains 2 victory points on the score track. In case of a tie, all tied players gain 2 victory points on the score track. Driver (Side B): Immediately receive 1 victory point on the score track and you can make up to 2 extra movements with your delivery truck this round (totaling 3 movements). The Driver can pass through a district blocked by the Police, but cannot make a delivery in that district. They are still blocked by the barrier and cannot end their movement in the same district where they started their movement. 2. Drink Delivery Drink delivery can be performed before or after the character action and must obligatorily follow the sequence below: Move your Delivery Truck (mandatory): Move your Delivery Truck to an adjacent district, respecting the restrictions of Barriers and the blocking of the Police position token. Distribute drinks (mandatory): Choose any two drinks from your truck and place them on the game board, in the current district where your Delivery Truck is located. Move drinks (optional): If desired, move one of the drinks (among those you just delivered) to an adjacent district, respecting the limitations of Barriers and the blocking of the Police position token. The drinks have different influence values: the Barrel has an influence value of 3; the Carboy, an influence value of 2; and the Bottle, an influence value of 1. Movement Limits: Police position token block: The Police position token blocks the movement (entry/delivery, exit, or passage) of drinks in a district.
