On one side, one player controls Frodo and his companions (Merry, Pippin, and Sam), desperately trying to reach Rivendell. On the other side, up to four players take on the roles of the terrifying Nazgûl, hunting the hobbits through clues and deduction.

In the first chapter, the mission is to travel from the Shire to Bree. The Frodo player moves secretly, but must stay alert: if they take too long (exceeding sixteen turns), the Ring's corruption begins to take its toll. If they successfully reach Bree, the adventure continues in the second chapter, where the dynamics shift. Now, the Frodo player doesn't control the hobbits directly; instead, they take on the role of Gandalf, using a journey deck to guide the group through uncertain paths toward Rivendell, attempting to distract the enemies.

Meanwhile, the hunters gain the support of the Witch-king of Angmar, increasing the pressure to corrupt the hobbits and reclaim the One Ring.
