At the start the course is a mystery: bends, rapids and narrow stretches are only revealed as the vessels move downstream, forcing captains to constantly tweak their routes. The goal is straightforward – transport the most passengers to the finish – but limited coal supplies demand careful planning of accelerations and brakes; burning too much leaves you stranded, while conserving too much puts you behind. The modular board, built from grid tiles that unfold during play, creates a map that grows with the game, ensuring no two races are alike. The Black Rose expansion adds a sixth player and the eponymous “Black Rose” boat, which requires no coal and can be piloted by the player in last place, acting as both a wildcard and a nuisance for opponents. Advanced rules introduce floating logs and sandbars, upping the unpredictability and the need for quick decisions. With 3‑5 players (6 with the expansion), a typical game lasts about 45 minutes, and the light complexity (1.7/5 weight) makes it friendly for families and casual gaming groups. If you enjoy fast‑paced races, resource management, and discovering the route as you go, Mississippi Queen delivers a lively, tactical experience that blends boat‑racing thrills with strategic fuel planning. ## FAQ ### How many players can play? 3 to 5 in the base game; the Black Rose expansion raises the limit to 6 players. ### What is the typical playing time?
