Imagine yourself as a farmer in Cambodia, striving to create the most productive rice paddy in the region. In Seasons of Rice, you achieve this by solving a card-based puzzle to expand your rural landscape. The game is split into two distinct phases simulating the climate: the Wet Season and the Dry Season, and each one completely changes how you acquire your resources.

Everything kicks off during the Wet Season, where abundance is the name of the game. You start with 7 cards in hand, and every turn, you select two: one is placed immediately into your landscape, and the other is placed in a communal row. The twist? You constantly exchange hands, meaning what you discard might end up helping your opponent. It's a delicate balance between your immediate needs and denying your rival.

Then comes the Dry Season. Here, the tension ramps up as options dwindle. Players take turns picking cards from that previously created communal row. Once the row is empty, the game ends. The goal is to enclose your paddies using paths; the larger the enclosed area, the more points you score. To boost your total, you can add houses, buffaloes, and family members within your fields. Additionally, each player has an 'Ancestor,' a guiding spirit that awards bonus points for meeting specific conditions.

Despite being a microgame with only 18 cards, don't be fooled: the strategic depth is genuine. You must plan ahead to ensure you don't enter the Dry Season without the right pieces to close your paddies. It's fast, compact, and requires organic reasoning to maximize your land's fertility.
