Playing the beautiful Caesar Deluxe, and delving into the historical period, I find it
inappropriate that the Aquilae is completeley not used in the SGBoH scenarios. It was a
banner that had both tactical and moral importance for the Roman Legions. For this reason, I
decided to integrate them.
Background: Sallust narrates that Gaius Marius, Caesar's
uncle, used the Aquilae (eagle in latin) as an insignia for
the first time in the war against the Cimbri, confirmed by
Pliny, for which Marius, at the time of his second consulate
in 103 BC, adopted the Aquilae as Legion’s standard,
assigning one to each Legion. Since then the use
remained, and the Aquilae was made of silver in the
Republican age (with gold arrows between the claws), and
of gold or gold-plated during the empire, but it is known
that there were also bronze Aquilae. The loss of the Aquilae
(whose bearer was called “aquilifer”), an object of true
veneration by the soldiers, could cause the dissolution of the unit, as if it were the soul of
the Legion. Mario favored it over the four animals until then, and with it, used as insignia:
the wolf; the minotaur; the horse; the wild boar. The Aquilae was always considered, even in
the Middle Ages, as a symbol of the empire, and of its loyalty to it.
Aquilae Home Rules for SGBoH:
•Is an Information Marker for Stacking purposes.
•Can be transported only by Combat Units or Leaders of its own Legion.
•Moves with the same MP as the Unit carrying it or alone with its printed MA (6) as a
Leader Unit Type only when its own Formation is Activated.
•If Unit(s) carrying it must Retreat, can keep it only if successfully passes a TQ (for stacked
Units use top Unit’s TQ); otherwise leaves Aquilae defenseless on the field.
•If enemy Units enter a hex with an Aquilae alone or not with Combat Units, it is Captured.
•Units in Retreat Before Combat or Retreat results must goes, when possible, in the
direction of its own Legion's Aquilae if in game.
If Aquilae is Captured
•+10 Routs Points.
•All Units of its Formation suffers -1TQ.
•Aquilae removed from the Battle.
