Game Objective: Create the Dream Park (and don't get eaten!)

Welcome, future dinosaur magnates! In Dinosaur Island, each of you takes on the role of a theme park manager, with the mission of bringing the most spectacular creatures of prehistory back to life. Your main objective? To build the most incredible, profitable, and, of course, safe park to attract crowds of visitors and leave the competition in the dust!

To become the greatest Jurassic entrepreneur, you need to accumulate more Victory Points (VP) than your rivals. How? By creating impressive dinosaurs, building exciting attractions, and managing your park with mastery. But beware! If security fails, your precious visitors might become dinosaur lunch, and that's not good for business (or your VPs!).

The game ends when only one Objective Card remains unclaimed. The current round is finished, and then the final score is calculated. Prepare for the adventure of your life... or to be the next meal!

Setup: Building Your Jurassic Empire

Let's set up the table and bring your park to life! Follow these steps to prepare your Dinosaur Island:

  1. Map the Game Skeleton:
    • Place the Market, the Research Center, and the Control Board in the center of the table, within reach of everyone.
    • Leave enough space for each player's individual area.
    • Next to the central boards, organize the 81 Money Tokens to form the Bank.
    • Next to the bank, place the 50 Dinosaurs, the 29 Enclosures, and the 12 Modifiers, forming the Common Stock.
    • Place all 80 Visitors (70 paying, 10 Hooligans) inside the Cloth Bag and leave it near the Common Stock.
  2. Establish the Dice Stock:
    • Randomly separate 2 DNA Dice per player, plus 1. These form the Dice Stock. The remaining dice return to the box.
  3. Position the Market Piles:
    • Shuffle the 22 Specialists and form a face-down pile in the corresponding space on the Market.
    • Mix the 30 Attractions and the 25 Lab Upgrades separately, forming 2 face-down draw piles in their respective fields on the Market.
      • Note: In 3-player games, remove pieces marked with "4+". In 2-player games, remove those marked with "3+" and "4+".
    • Stack the 4 "Research II" Lab Upgrades and the 4 "DNA Refinement II", face-up, in the corresponding spaces on the Market.
  4. Create the Market Rows:
    • Reveal the first 4 Attractions from the pile, positioning them in the Market Rows (right side), ordered by cost: the most expensive in the $5 row down to the cheapest in the $2 row.
    • Then, reveal the first 4 Lab Upgrades, one in each Market Row.
    • Finally, reveal the first 4 Specialists, one in each Market Row.
  5. Position the Research Piles:
    • Separate the Dinosaur Recipes into 3 piles by category (large carnivores, small carnivores, and herbivores).
    • Shuffle each pile and place them face-down in the Research Center locations.
    • Reveal the first Dinosaur Recipe from each pile.
  6. Reveal the End-Game Objectives:
    • Separate the 39 Objective Cards by type (short, medium, and long game).
    • Choose a game type and randomly reveal a number of Objective Cards equal to the number of players plus one. Leave them face-up next to the central boards. The rest return to the box.
  7. Prepare the Twists:
    • Shuffle the 11 Twist Cards and form a face-down pile.
    • Reveal 2 Twist Cards, positioning them face-up next to the Objective Cards. The rules on these cards are valid for the entire game. (If one contradicts the other, discard and reveal another). The rest return to the box.
  8. Distribute Player Components:
    • Each player receives 1 Laboratory, 1 Park, 9 Workers, 3 Scientists, 5 Corporation Markers, and 10 Control Cubes in their color, plus 6 Limit Markers.
    • Undistributed components return to the box.

    Individual Preparation (for each player):

    • Position your 2 boards in front of you: Laboratory on the left and Park on the right. Leave space to the right of the Laboratory for Specialists.
    • Position 4 of your Workers at the top of your Laboratory (over the corporation logo), forming the Worker Stock. Leave 4 other Workers forming the Labor Market (not available at the start). The last Worker goes on the Turn Order Track.
    • Position your 3 Scientists next to the logo above your Laboratory, forming the Research Stock.
    • Receive Starting DNA: Position a Limit Marker on position "4" of each basic DNA track (blue, pink, and purple) and on position "2" of each advanced DNA track (green, red, and orange) in the DNA Cryo-Storage of your Laboratory. Then, position a Control Cube on the value "1" of each basic DNA track and on the value "0" of the advanced DNA tracks.
    • Adjust Public Tracks: In your Park, there is already a dinosaur exhibit and an imprinted Enclosure. Place 1 Dinosaur in the Enclosure. Place 1 of your Control Cubes on the Excitement Level track, on the Control Board, over the value "1". Position another of your Control Cubes on the Score Track, also on the Control Board, over the value "10".
    • Define Threat and Security Levels: The dinosaur in your Enclosure represents a threat. Position 1 of your Control Cubes on the Threat track of your Laboratory, over the value "1". Then, position your last Control Cube on the Security Indicator, also in your Laboratory, over the value "1".
  9. Define the Starting Player: The player who most recently extracted DNA from a mosquito in amber is the starting player. If no one has done that, the one who most recently visited a theme park. They receive the Starting Player Marker. Organize the Turn Order Track clockwise from them.
  10. Receive Your Starting Capital: Give $15 to the starting player. Each other player, following the Turn Order, receives $1 more than the previous one (2nd player $16, 3rd $17, etc.).

The Game Turn: A Day in the Life of a Park Manager

Dinosaur Island is played over a series of rounds, each with five distinct phases:

  1. Research Phase
  2. Market Phase
  3. Worker Phase
  4. Park Phase
  5. Cleanup Phase

The turn order is crucial! In the first round, it follows clockwise from the starting player. In subsequent rounds, it will be determined by the players' positions on the Score Track (the one with fewer VPs plays first).

1. Research Phase

It's time to put your Scientists to work! The starting player rolls all DNA Dice from the Dice Stock and places them in the spaces of the Research Center.

In turn order, each player sends one of their Scientists to one of the following actions. Each space can be occupied by only one scientist. Continue until each player has had 3 turns in this phase (using their 3 scientists).

  • Research DNA: Send a Scientist to a space at the top of the Research Center to acquire the corresponding die. Multiply the amount of DNA shown on the die by your scientist's level and receive that amount of DNA, storing it in your Laboratory. Remember: you can never store more DNA than the limit of your Cryo-Storage.
    • Rare Symbols (Wild): If a die shows the "enclosure upgrade" or "worker" symbols, you must send a level 3 scientist and receive the benefit only once (it does not multiply by the scientist's level). The "enclosure upgrade" symbol allows for a 2-point improvement in an Enclosure's capacity. The "worker" symbol allows you to acquire a Worker from the Labor Market.
  • Upgrade Cryo-Storage: Send a Scientist to one of the 6 spaces in this section of the Research Center. You can increase the limits of your Cryo-Storage tracks in any combination that totals the level of the scientist used, moving the Limit Markers up. This does not increase stored DNA, but rather future capacity.
  • Acquire a Dinosaur Recipe: There are 3 Dinosaur Recipes available each round (one herbivore, one small carnivore, and one large carnivore). The number in the space indicates the minimum scientist level required. When acquiring a recipe, immediately place it in your Park, occupying two available zones.
  • Pass: If you pass, choose one of your available Scientists and position them in your Worker Stock. They can be used as a Worker in later phases. The "pass" space is never occupied, and you can pass with as many scientists as you wish, but you must use all 3 scientists (or pass with them) in this phase.

After all players have had 3 turns, evaluate the remaining DNA dice. Take the die with the most threat points (1, 2, or 3) and move it to the threat area in the Research Center. This value will be added to all players' threat levels in the Park Phase.

2. Market Phase

In this phase, players visit the Market. In turn order, each player performs one action in the market. Passing is also an option. Continue until each player has had 2 turns in this phase.

  • Hire a Specialist: Pay the cost of the row the Specialist is in. Place the Specialist card to the right of your Laboratory and perform any immediate effects. This is a direct way to acquire Workers from the Labor Market.
    • Specialist Limit: Normally, you can only hire 3 Specialists. If you hire a fourth, you must dismiss one already hired, losing its bonuses and workers.
  • Build an Attraction: Pay the market price, which is the sum of the cost printed on the Attraction and the cost of the row it is in. Immediately place it in an empty spot in your Park.
  • Buy a Lab Upgrade: Pay the cost of the market row the Lab Upgrade is in. Place it in one of the six spaces in your Laboratory. Initially, use the "under construction" spots. If all are filled, you must cover a previous Upgrade (the covered one no longer has an effect).
    • Special Upgrades: Research II ($3) and DNA Refinement II ($5) must be placed over the corresponding Research I and DNA Refinement I spaces.
  • Buy DNA: Pay $2 to $5 to the Bank to receive the corresponding amount of DNA, as shown in the Market. If you buy DNA, discard any market item (except special lab upgrades) from the row corresponding to the amount paid. You can buy DNA even if the row is empty.
  • Pass: Receive $2 from the Bank. Remember that you have two actions in this phase, even if the first is to pass.

3. Worker Phase

In this phase, you will use the Workers from your Worker Stock (including scientists who passed in the research phase) to perform Laboratory Actions. This phase can be performed simultaneously by all players, as there is no direct interaction with opponents. Each player can perform their actions in any order they wish.

Many Lab Upgrades (including imprinted ones) have worker spaces. Each space can be activated once per round (except those marked "unlimited") and requires a single worker (unless otherwise indicated). Abilities with a green background are passive and activated upon purchase, not by worker allocation.

  • DNA Refinement: Allows you to convert basic DNA into advanced DNA. Spend the two indicated basic DNAs to receive the resulting advanced DNA.
  • Creating Dinosaurs: Use a Worker in a "research" space. Spend the necessary DNA from your Cryo-Storage according to a Dinosaur Recipe in your Park. Check if the corresponding Enclosure has capacity. Add a Dinosaur from the Common Stock to the Enclosure.
    • When creating a dinosaur, your Excitement Level increases by the amount shown on the recipe (maximum of 20). Your Threat Level also increases by the amount of threat points on the recipe. If Threat reaches 11, take a "+10" modifier, add it to the track, and replace the control cube on "1".
  • Improving Security: Use a Worker on an upgrade that allows you to increase security. Pay the cost shown
