1. Objective of the Game

In Eleven: Unexpected Events, you are the manager of a football club. Your goal is to build a successful team, navigate the unpredictable world of football, and finish the season with the highest Reputation score. The game ends when the End of the Game condition is triggered (see section 5). The player whose club is highest on the Reputation track at that moment wins.

2. Preparation (Setup)

  1. Shuffle the Board Meeting cards into the Board Meeting deck.
  2. Shuffle the Unexpected Events cards and place them near the Transfer Area as the Unexpected Events deck.
  3. Place the Reputation board below the League table and then place the Reputation tokens on it according to the example in the manual. Return the rest of the Reputation tokens to the box.
  4. Each player receives the starting set of Player cards, Staff cards, and any other components listed in the Components section.
  5. Set up the League table, Stadium, and any other board areas as shown in the game layout.

3. Flow of the Game

The game proceeds in a series of Weeks. Each Week consists of the following phases in order:

  1. Board Meeting Phase – Players may play Board Meeting cards to gain or lose Reputation, pay maintenance, or trigger other effects.
  2. Transfer Phase – Players may hire or fire Players and Staff, and contract sponsors.
  3. Training Phase – Players may train their Players to improve Strength or unlock new abilities.
  4. Match Phase – The club plays a match. Before the match, each player draws Unexpected Events cards until a card with a tag matching one of their assigned Player cards is drawn. Resolve these cards from top to bottom. Then resolve the match normally (details are in the base game rules).
  5. Maintenance Phase – Pay maintenance costs for Staff and other assets. If a player cannot pay, they lose Reputation as described in the Board Meeting section.

After the final Week, the End of the Game condition is checked. If met, the game ends and scoring is performed.

4. Actions and How to Play

During the Board Meeting Phase, you may play any number of Board Meeting cards that you have in hand. Each card has one of the following effects:

  • Gain Reputation – Move your Reputation token one space to the right.
  • Maintenance – Pay 2 Reputation to keep a Staff card active. If you cannot pay, you must lose 1 Reputation.
  • End of the Game – Trigger the final scoring immediately (rarely used).

During the Transfer Phase, you may hire or fire Players and Staff, and contract sponsors. Your options are limited by your current Reputation position on the Reputation track (see the Reputation Track section for specific restrictions).

During the Training Phase, you may spend resources to increase a Player's Strength or unlock new abilities. The exact mechanics are detailed in the base game rules.

During the Match Phase, you assign Players to the match lineup. After drawing and resolving all relevant Unexpected Events cards, resolve the match normally. The base game rules cover scoring, goal differences, and other match outcomes.

During the Maintenance Phase, pay the required maintenance for each active Staff card. If you cannot pay, follow the penalty described in the Board Meeting section.

5. End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when the End of the Game condition is triggered. This occurs when a player plays an End of the Game Board Meeting card or when the final Week of the season is completed (see the base game rules for the exact trigger).

Scoring is performed as follows:

  • Each player’s final position on the Reputation track is recorded.
  • The player whose club is highest on the Reputation track wins the game.
  • If two or more players share the same highest Reputation position, the tie is broken by the rules for resolving ties in the base game (or by the expansion rules if applicable).

There are no additional point totals or bonus scoring beyond the Reputation track.

6. Tips for Winning

  • Pay close attention to the Reputation track effects. Being in a lower Reputation position can severely limit your hiring options and increase penalties.
  • Use Board Meeting cards that grant Reputation or reduce maintenance costs early in the game to build a strong foundation.
  • Manage your Unexpected Events cards carefully. Drawing a card that matches a high‑value Player can give you a significant advantage if you resolve it before the match.
