Game Objective
Get ready for a night of bluffing, deduction, and lots of fun in **One Night Ultimate Werewolf**! Here, each player secretly takes on the role of a **Villager**, a **Werewolf**, or a **special character**. The main objective of the village team is simple: discover who the **Werewolves** are and eliminate at least one of them to secure victory. But beware, if you are a **Werewolf**, your goal is to survive the vote and ensure none of your furry companions are lynched!
The tension is palpable, accusations fly, and the truth is a mirage. Who will you trust? Who is lying? Only one night and one day will decide the fate of the village!
Setup
Let's set up the table for your first night of mystery! The setup for **One Night Ultimate Werewolf** is super quick and varies slightly with the number of players. To begin, follow these steps:
- Select the Cards: The number of cards in play should always be **three cards more** than the number of players. For an initial game of 3 to 5 players, the manual recommends the following cards:
- 3 Players: 2 Werewolves, 1 Seer, 1 Robber, 1 Troublemaker, 1 Villager.
- 4 Players: Add +1 Villager to the 3-player setup.
- 5 Players: Add +2 Villagers to the 3-player setup.
BoardGameBot Tip: To make it easier, place the **Role/Function Tokens** corresponding to the selected cards near the center of the table. This way, everyone knows which roles are in play and the Narrator has a reference for the night order.
- Shuffle and Deal: Shuffle all selected cards face down. Deal one card to each player.
- Center Cards: The three remaining cards should be placed face down in the center of the table.
- See Your Secret Role: Each player must secretly look at their card and place it face down, near the three center cards. Make sure everyone can easily reach the cards.
- Choose a Narrator: One player will be designated as the **Narrator**. They will be responsible for guiding the **Night** phase, announcing the roles and keeping time. The Narrator also participates in the game as a character!
Game Turn
A game of **One Night Ultimate Werewolf** takes place in just two exciting phases: **Night** and **Day**.
Night Phase
The **Night** is when characters' special abilities come into play. The **Narrator** will guide everyone, and it's crucial that no one opens their eyes unless their role is called. Players with **Villager**, **Tanner**, or **Hunter** cards never wake up at night.
The **Narrator** should follow the order of waking up roles, silently counting to ten after each role is called to give players time to perform their actions. Use this script as a guide:
- “Everyone, close your eyes.”
All players (including the Narrator) close their eyes.
- Role Calls (in order):
The Narrator will call the roles present in the game, one by one, in the following order (if the role is not in play, the Narrator simply skips to the next):
- #1: Doppelganger: "Doppelganger, wake up and look at another player's card. You will be that role now. If your new role has a night action, do it now." (The Doppelganger looks at another player's card. If it's Seer, Robber, Troublemaker, or Drunk, they perform the action immediately. If it's Werewolf or Mason, they wake up with them. If it's Villager, Tanner, or Hunter, they do nothing.) "Doppelganger, close your eyes." (There are special scripts for Doppelganger with Alpha Wolf or Insomniac, which the Narrator should follow if those cards are in play.)
- #2: Werewolves: "Werewolves, wake up and look for other Werewolves." (Werewolves open their eyes and identify each other. If there is only one Werewolf, they may look at one center card.) "Werewolves, close your eyes."
- #3: Alpha Wolf: "Alpha Wolf, wake up. Werewolves, put your thumbs up so the Alpha Wolf can see who you are." (The Alpha Wolf opens their eyes and sees who the Werewolves are.) "Werewolves, hide your thumbs. Alpha Wolf, close your eyes."
- #4: Masons: "Masons, wake up and look for other Masons." (Masons open their eyes and identify each other. If a Mason doesn't see another, the other Mason card is in the center.) "Masons, close your eyes."
- #5: Seer: "Seer, wake up. You may look at another player's card or two center cards." (The Seer opens their eyes and chooses an option.) "Seer, close your eyes."
- #6: Robber: "Robber, wake up. You may swap your card with another player's card, and then look at your new card." (The Robber opens their eyes, may swap, and sees the new card. They join the team of the new card, but do not perform its night action.) "Robber, close your eyes."
- #7: Troublemaker: "Troublemaker, wake up. You may swap the cards between two other players." (The Troublemaker opens their eyes and swaps two players' cards without looking at them. The affected players assume the new role and team, even without knowing.) "Troublemaker, close your eyes."
- #8: Drunk: "Drunk, wake up and swap your card with a center card." (The Drunk opens their eyes, swaps their card for a center card, but DOES NOT look at it. They assume the new role and team.) "Drunk, close your eyes."
- #9: Insomniac: "Insomniac, wake up and look at your card." (The Insomniac opens their eyes and looks at their own card to see if it has changed.) "Insomniac, close your eyes."
- #9a: Doppelganger/Insomniac: (If the Doppelganger saw the Insomniac's card) "Doppelganger, if you saw the Insomniac's card, wake up and look at your card." "Doppelganger, close your eyes."
Narrator Tip: The Narrator can tap on the table during the night to muffle the sound of players' actions. Keep your eyes closed unless you need to check the order of roles.
- “Everyone, Wake Up!”
All players open their eyes and the **Night** phase ends.
Day Phase
After the **Night**, the **Day Phase** begins with a heated discussion. Players must debate who they believe the **Werewolves** are. Everyone can say what they want, but they **can never show their cards** to anyone. Remember that night actions may have changed the cards, so your current role is the card in front of you, not necessarily the one you started with.
The discussion can last a few minutes. The time is flexible, but for larger groups, a timer can add a sense of urgency.
Voting:
After the discussion, it's time to vote:
- “Everyone, 3, 2, 1, Vote!”
- Each player simultaneously points to another player they wish to lynch.
- The player with the most votes dies and reveals their card.
- In case of a tie, all players tied with the majority of votes die and reveal their cards.
- If no player receives more than one vote (for example, if everyone votes in a circle around the table), no one dies.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends after just one **Night** and one **Day**. The victory conditions are as follows:
The Village Team Wins if:
- At least one **Werewolf** dies. Even if one or more non-Werewolf players die along with a Werewolf, all of the village team wins.
- No one is a **Werewolf** (i.e., all Werewolf cards are in the center of the table) and no one dies.
The Werewolf Team Wins if:
- At least one player is a **Werewolf** and no **Werewolf** is killed.
Special Rules for the Tanner:
- The **Tanner** wins only if they die.
- If the **Tanner** dies and no **Werewolf** dies, the Werewolves do not win.
- If the **Tanner** dies and a **Werewolf** also dies, the Village team also wins.
- If the **Tanner** dies when all Werewolves are in the center, the village team loses.
- The **Tanner** is not on the Werewolf team nor the Village team.
Tips for Winning
To avoid getting lost on the first night, here are some essential tips:
- Observe Night Actions: Even if you are not a role that wakes up, pay attention to subtle sounds and movements during the **Night**. The sound of cards being swapped or looked at can be a valuable clue. If you are a Werewolf, try to memorize who your partners are and who might have seen something.
- Bluff and Deduce: The **Day Phase** is all about bluffing and deduction. If you are a **Werewolf**, pretend to be a village role and try to divert attention. If you are from the village, use the information you obtained (or that others claim to have obtained) to build a case against the suspects. Remember that cards may have changed!
- Use Role Tokens: Place the **Role Tokens** that are in play visible to everyone. This helps to remember which characters are in the game and the order in which they wake up. During the day, you can even use the tokens to mark who you "checked" or who you suspect has a certain role, helping to organize the discussion.
