Game Objective

This guide explains the Aquilae Home Rules for Simple GBoH Battle Manual (SGBoH). The Aquilae, a Roman Legion's eagle standard, held significant tactical and moral importance. These rules integrate the Aquilae into SGBoH scenarios, treating it as an Information Marker for Stacking purposes and a symbol of the Legion's loyalty and soul.

Actions and How to Play

The Aquilae has the following characteristics and behaviors:

  • It functions as an Information Marker for Stacking purposes.
  • It can only be transported by Combat Units or Leaders belonging to its own Legion.
  • It moves with the same Movement Points (MP) as the Unit carrying it.
  • When moved alone, it uses its printed Movement Allowance (MA) of 6, and it is treated as a Leader Unit Type. This can only happen when its own Formation is Activated.
  • If Unit(s) carrying the Aquilae must Retreat, they can keep it only if they successfully pass a Tactical Quality (TQ) check. For stacked Units, use the top Unit's TQ. If the check fails, the Aquilae is left defenseless on the field.
  • If enemy Units enter a hex containing an Aquilae that is alone or not with Combat Units, the Aquilae is Captured.
  • Units in Retreat Before Combat or Retreat results must, when possible, move in the direction of their own Legion's Aquilae if it is present in the game.

End of Game and Scoring

If an Aquilae is Captured, the following consequences occur:

  • The capturing side gains +10 Routs Points.
  • All Units of its Formation suffer a -1 TQ penalty.
  • The Aquilae is removed from the Battle.

Tips for Winning

  • Protecting your Aquilae is crucial. If it is Captured, your Formation suffers a significant penalty (-1 TQ) and the enemy gains valuable Routs Points.
  • When retreating, prioritize moving towards your Aquilae if it's still on the board, as this can help maintain unit cohesion and morale.
  • Be aware of the Aquilae's movement capabilities. It can move with its carrying Unit or independently with a decent MA of 6 when its Formation is Activated, but it's vulnerable when alone.
