About the game
1825 Unit 3 is the final installment in Francis Tresham’s 18xx series. Unlike the other units, it was designed specifically for two players and can be played on its own, though it also works in conjunction with Unit 2 (Midlands) and Unit 1 (Southern England) for a larger experience. The map covers northern England and Scotland, stretching from Middlesborough in the lower‑right corner to Fort William in the upper‑left, with a small extension that includes Aberdeen.

At the start of the game, two major companies launch from Glasgow: the North British Railway heading north and the Caledonian Railway heading south. Each player controls one of them, competing to capture the lucrative route that links the Scottish capital to Edinburgh. In addition, the Glasgow and South Western Railway also begins in Glasgow but points west, giving the player who takes control an advantage of running two companies simultaneously. This dual control allows resource transfers between the firms, a move that can swing the tide at critical moments.

The share market is relatively simple, lacking the big price swings seen in some 18xx games, but it still demands strategic decisions: hold profits to fund future expansions or sell shares for immediate capital. The game also features three “small companies” that serve as investment opportunities and support for the big ones, but with more restrictive rules.

The two‑player format makes the game more intense; a mistake by one can be immediately compensated by the opponent. That’s why 1825 Unit 3 functions as a head‑to‑head duel for 18xx veterans who prefer railway rivalry over market play. If you enjoy building routes, speculating on the stock market, and want a two‑handed challenge, this title is for you.
