Step by step
Game Objective
The objective of Azul: Stained Glass Pavilion is to be the player with the most points at the end of the game. The game ends after the completion of 6 rounds and a final scoring.
Preparation (Setup)
- Swap all player boards from the base game with the player boards from this expansion. Each side of the new player boards is a different color (orange or purple). After determining which side you will use this time, all players place their boards in front of them with that same side facing up.
- Swap the scoring board from the base game with the new scoring board. Use the side with the same color as the player boards.
- Each player receives a cover and places it over their player board, aligning them perfectly.
- Insert the scoring board between the top and bottom layers of the scoring board cover.
- Swap the scoring markers with the new markers and stack them on the 5th space of the scoring track.
- All other steps are identical to the base game.
Game Flow
The rules are the same as the base game. The game progresses through 6 rounds, after which a final scoring occurs.
Actions and How to Play
The rules for how to play are the same as the base game. However, players should take into account the specific colors of the diamond-shaped spaces on the star in the center of the board, as well as the new fountains.
- When surrounding the 4 adjacent spaces of a fountain with tiles, you gain a scoring bonus in the form of an extra tile taken from the stock spaces of the scoring board. You must immediately take a tile of your choice. Place the bonus tile you received next to your player board. Before the next player's turn, draw tiles from the bag to fill the empty stock spaces on the scoring board.
- The star in the center of this expansion's player boards dictates the specific color of each tile to be placed in all of its 6 diamond-shaped spaces. The number of tiles needed depends on the side of the player board you are playing with:
- Orange side: the number of tiles is 1 to 6.
- Purple side: the number of tiles is always 3.
- Similar to the alternative gameplay of the base game, the purple side of the player board allows you to choose the color combination (single-color or multi-color) for each of the 6 outer stars. As in the base game, a multi-colored star must have 6 tiles of different colors, and a monochromatic star must have 6 tiles of the same color. It is allowed to have more than one monochromatic star or more than one multi-colored star.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends after the completion of 6 rounds and a final scoring. The scoring of certain objectives has changed:
- The purple side of the new scoring board features a different order for determining the wildcard color (starting with orange in the first round). Thus, the points awarded for each completed monochromatic star have also changed (e.g., each completed red star awards 18 points).
- When playing with the purple side, the points gained for covering all spaces of a specific number have changed as follows:
- If you have covered all number 1s, gain 3 points.
- If you have covered all number 2s, gain 6 points.
- If you have covered all number 3s, gain 18 points.
- If you have covered all number 4s, gain 12 points.
- At the end of the game, each complete set of 4 fully surrounded structures (a pillar, a statue, a window, or a fountain) is worth extra points as follows:
- Purple side: gain 12 points.
- Orange side: gain 15 points.
- Now, you gain 15 points for each completed multi-colored star.
