Game Objective
Undead or Alive is an expansion for BANG! Dice Game that introduces new game modules, including duel mechanics and the possibility of a zombie outbreak. The main objective depends on the state of the game: if there is an outbreak, the zombies and their Zombie Master attempt to eliminate all survivors, while the survivors attempt to eliminate all zombies and the Master.
Setup
The game follows all the normal rules of BANG! Dice Game, with the following changes depending on the chosen modules:
- Module 1 - Eye to Eye: Replace two of the five base game dice with the new Duel dice. Shuffle the Duel Wound tokens and the Fury cards and create individual face-down draw piles in the center of the table.
- Module 2 - Two Bullets are Enough: Shuffle the Fury cards and place them in a face-down draw pile.
- Module 3 - A New Gang in Town: Shuffle the new Character cards together with the old ones.
- Module 4 - Alive or Undead? (For 8 players only): Shuffle the 8 Graveyard cards and form a face-down draw pile.
Gameplay Flow
The game follows the turn structure of the base game, but with the following additional dynamics:
- Player Turn: The active player rolls the dice. If using Module 1, they roll the three basic dice and the two Duel dice.
- Duel Resolution: If the player rolls a Challenge a Duel symbol, they choose an opponent and pass a Duel die to them. The opponent rolls the die; if they do not get a Challenge a Duel result, they lose 1 life point and draw a Duel Wound token. If they get the result, the die returns to the original player. Duels are resolved one after another in the order chosen by the player whose turn it is.
- Using Fury Cards: At the start of your turn, you reveal all your Fury cards. The symbols are added to the dice results (the arrows are activated immediately). At the end of your turn, discard all revealed Fury cards.
- Zombie Outbreak Mechanic: If a player is eliminated, a Graveyard card is revealed at the end of the current turn. If the number of zombie hands on the card is greater than the number of living players, a zombie outbreak begins at the start of the next turn.
Actions and How to Play
During your turn, you interact with the dice and cards. Below are details of important actions and components:
Duel Dice Symbols
- Arrow
- Dynamite
- Whiskey Bottle: Gain 1 life point (cannot be assigned to another player) and discard 1 Duel Wound token. If you do not have the token, draw 1 Fury card.
- Target "1" and Target "2"
- Beer
- Gatling Gun
- Challenge a Duel
Duel Wound Tokens
When drawing one, place it face-up in front of you. They serve to cancel an identical symbol rolled on a die that you decided to keep. The Whiskey Bottle token is an exception and works as an extra result instead of canceling a base result. At the end of your turn, shuffle all your Duel Wound tokens back into the pile.
Fury Cards
You draw a Fury card if you lose 2 or more life points in a turn or if you roll a Whiskey Bottle symbol and do not have Duel Wound tokens to discard.
End of Game and Scoring
The end of the game depends on a zombie outbreak or the elimination of the players.
Victory Conditions

- If there is a zombie outbreak:
- The zombies and their Zombie Master win if all survivors are eliminated. >
- The survivors win if all zombies and the Zombie Master are eliminated.
- Exception: If all players die in the same turn (e.g., native attack), the zombies win.
Note on the Zombie Master: If the Renegade is alive, they become the Zombie Master. If not, a common zombie takes the role. The Zombie Master keeps their life points and ability.
