Step by step
Overview
Barcelona: Passeig de Gràcia is an expansion for the base game Barcelona. In this expansion, players manage Pedestrians walking along the iconic Passeig de Gràcia. The goal is to ensure their walk is as pleasant as possible; the higher the Joy value they experience, the greater the rewards you receive once they reach their destination.
Setup
Before starting, punch out all cardboard components. Follow these steps to set up the expansion:
- Replace the 3 Action tiles showing specific icons (consult the base game for these) with the 3 new expansion Action tiles, or discard the base game versions and add the new ones randomly as per base game rules.
- Mix the 2 new Cerdà Scoring tiles and 2 Modernisme tiles with the matching tiles from the base game.
- During the base game setup, when selecting Public Service tiles, you must choose exactly 1 set from the expansion to replace one of the base game Public Service stacks.
- Add the new Sagrada Família tiles to the 4 sets from the base game.
- Place the Passeig de Gràcia side board next to the main board.
- Randomly choose 6 Amenities tiles and place them face-up on their dedicated spaces on the side board.
- Each player places their color-coded Pedestrian dice on the Barcelona and Gràcia starting spaces of the side board, set to a value of "1".
- In a 3-player game, the 3rd player starts with one die on "2".
- In a 4-player game, the last player starts with both dice on "2".
- Randomly place one A, one B, and one C violet Cobblestone face-up on the 3 dedicated spaces of the Passeig de Gràcia Sidewalk. Return the remaining violet Cobblestones to the box. Place the blank hexagonal Cobblestones in the general supply.
- Place the new Sidewalk overlay tile so that it covers the one printed on the base game side board.
Game Flow
The expansion integrates with the base game. The core movement involves your 2 Pedestrians (represented by dice in your color): one starts in the old part of Barcelona and moves toward Gràcia on the right side of the street, while the other starts in Gràcia and moves toward Barcelona on the left side of the street.
As Pedestrians move, you check if they qualify to enjoy adjacent Amenities, which increases their Joy value. When a Pedestrian reaches its destination city, you gain Victory Points and rewards based on its Joy value, after which the die resets to its starting city.
Actions and How to Play
You can influence your Pedestrians through various means. Note that you cannot influence Pedestrian dice belonging to other players.
Movement and Joy
- Move Pedestrians: You can move a Pedestrian toward its destination city (up to 1, 2, or 3 steps depending on the number next to the arrow on the action). After each step, check the adjacent Amenities tile. If you have fulfilled the condition shown on the tile (the requirement increases with each step: 1x, 2x, etc.), increase that Pedestrian's Joy value by 1.
- Increase Joy: Certain actions allow you to increase the Joy value of one Pedestrian by 1 or 2.
- Meeting: If both of your Pedestrians are on the same space of the Passeig de Gràcia, increase both their Joy values by 1 (this does not apply if they meet in a city).
- Maximum Value: A Pedestrian die cannot exceed a Joy value of 6.
Special Tiles and Icons
- Amenities Tiles: These tiles show a main action and a specific value. If you have performed the depicted action enough times, the Pedestrian enjoys the amenity and gains 1 Joy.
- Sidewalk: Contains new icons that refer to your Pedestrians.
- Public Services & Sagrada Família: These contain new icons that influence your Pedestrians.
Solo Mode (Gaudí)
In solo mode, you play against Gaudí. Gaudí's Pedestrians never change their Joy value. Between steps 3 and 4 of Gaudí's turns, check if any action on the current face-up card is present on an Amenities tile; if so, advance Gaudí's Pedestrian one space. If it reaches the destination, it gains rewards and places a hexagonal Cobblestone.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends following the standard base game end conditions. During the final scoring, include the following:
Pedestrian Scoring
Add the Joy values visible on your Pedestrians that are still on the Passeig de Gràcia (not on the starting spaces) and gain that many Victory Points.
Hexagonal Cobblestones
When you place a hexagonal Cobblestone on the Passeig de Gràcia side board, you gain the reward on the space covered, multiplied by the number of times you have fulfilled the condition depicted on an adjacent violet Cobblestone. If adjacent to two violet Cobblestones, you must choose one.
Gaudí's Rewards (Solo Mode)
When Gaudí's Pedestrian reaches a destination, he gains VP and 1 GR (if Joy is 6) and must place a hexagonal Cobblestone. He prioritizes 4 VP and then 3 VP spaces.
