Step by step
Objective of the Game
Welcome to the Inn at the Heart of the Woods, where spirits gather to share stories, enjoy sake, and play darts. This expansion for Bitoku introduces three modular Menus (Conversations, Kodamas, and Festival) that enhance the base game with new cards, tiles, and mechanics. Players aim to earn Victory Points (VP) through strategic alliances, resource management, and completing objectives tied to the new components. The game ends and scores are tallied as per the base Bitoku rules, with additional VP from expansion modules.
Preparation (Setup)
General Setup
- Add the 6 new Yōkai cards and 5 new Iwakura Rock tiles to the base game components.
- For the Kodamas module, replace 3 base Lake Treasure tiles with 1 of each new type (Golden, black, white) and 2 from the base game. Place 1 tile randomly in each of the 5 Forest regions.
- For the Festival module, place the small board next to the main board. Assemble the 65 Festival cards (optionally excluding red Brawling cards for less conflict). Shuffle and place the deck face-down. Each player draws 2 Festival cards to start.
Note: Modules can be combined freely, but beginners should introduce them one at a time.
Game Flow
The expansion follows the base game’s structure (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter Phases), with added interactions:
- Yōkai Alliances: Hybrid cards count as 2 Yōkai types and grant 2 VP per Iwakura Rock (max 8 VP) when discarded in Winter.
- Lake Treasures: New Kodama Track rewards trigger when reaching tick-marked spaces (immediate VP or endgame bonuses).
- Festival cards: Played during appropriate phases for powerful one-time effects. Earn more by placing Pilgrims on Illumination spaces or keeping Vision cards.
Actions and How to Play
New Components
- Iwakura Rocks: Grant VP at game end if adjacent to Pilgrims (e.g., 12 VP for 4 Crystals × 3 Pilgrims).
- Conversations Yōkai: Count as Imomushi and Nezumi. Action: Gain 2 resources, a Crystal, or build. Discarding in Winter grants 2 VP per Rock.
- Golden Lakes: Grant VP during Ascension Phase for reaching tick-marked spaces (e.g., +2 VP per completed Vision card).
- White Lakes: Immediate VP when reaching ticks (e.g., +1 VP per Pilgrim on Torii Gates).
- Black Lakes: VP for Kodama position + rewards when advancing to ticks (no rewards when moving backward).
Festival Cards
Play these anytime their activation condition is met (e.g., "when playing a Yōkai card"). Discard after use. Earn cards by:
- Placing a Pilgrim on an Illumination space.
- Keeping a drawn Vision card (rejecting both denies a Festival card).
End of Game and Scoring
- Iwakura Rocks: VP for adjacent Pilgrims and linked criteria (e.g., Crystals).
- Lake Treasures: VP for Kodama positions, tick-marked spaces, and completed objectives.
- Festival cards: +0.5 VP each (rounded up) during Ascension. Some grant bonus VP if held at game end.
- Other criteria: VP for Buildings, Mitama, Bitoku cards, etc., as marked on components.
Tips to Win
- Prioritize Pilgrims on Iwakura Rocks: They’re worthless without adjacent Pilgrims at game end.
- Time Festival cards: Save powerful effects for critical turns, but remember they’re worth VP if unused.
- Monitor Kodama movement: Force opponents backward on black/white Lakes to deny repeat rewards.
