Step by step
1. Game Objective
The Resistance expansion for Black Orchestra introduces new characters and three thematic modules that expand the strategies for defeating the Nazi regime. The core objective remains the same: players act as conspirators working to remove Hitler from power. Depending on the chosen module, you may recruit allies in the Kreisau Circle, face the relentless pursuit of Horst Kopkow, or complete strategic missions in the Red Orchestra. Victory is achieved by successfully carrying out resistance plans, while defeat occurs if the conspirators are captured or if the specific conditions of each module (such as exhausting Kopkow's encounter deck) are met.
2. Setup
Setup follows the base game rules, with specific additions for each module:
- Red Orchestra: Add the new event cards to the decks before shuffling. Remove extra cards from the stages (2 cards from Stage 1 and 3 cards from all other stages). Shuffle the new conspirator cards into the main deck, place the Resistance Board on the table, shuffle the Mission Cards, and position the indicated tokens and tiles.
- Horst Kopkow: Add the new event cards (removing 2 cards from Stage 1 and 4 cards from the remaining stages). Place the Horst Kopkow tile and the Turn Sequence Tile on top of the Stage 2 deck. Position the Investigation Board and the Encounter Cards deck.
- Kreisau Circle: Add the new event cards (removing 2 cards from Stage 1 and 3 cards from the others). Mix the new Item Tiles with the basic ones and place 2 in each location with a black square. Position the Ally Board and reveal the first 3 Ally Tiles.
3. Game Flow
The game progresses in turns. With the addition of the Horst Kopkow module, the turn flow gains a mandatory fourth step:
- Horst Kopkow Movement: At the end of each turn, Kopkow moves 1 space toward the conspirator with the highest Suspicion (except for those in Prison).
- Encounter Resolution: If Kopkow ends his movement in the same location as one or more conspirators, the player with the highest Suspicion must draw and resolve an Encounter Card.
In the other modules, the flow follows the standard structure of the base game, with the possibility of performing new actions specific to each expansion during your turn.
4. Actions and How to Play
The expansion introduces new actions depending on the module:
- Placement (Red Orchestra): Use an action to place a Teleprinter or Pamphlet token at your location (standard locations only). Roll a die: if you roll the # symbol, your Suspicion increases by 1 and the token is not placed.
- Diversion (Horst Kopkow): Use an action and roll a die. On a 1-4, move Kopkow one space wherever you wish. On a 5-6, you do not move Kopkow, but you gain 1 Suspicion.
- Uncover (Kreisau Circle): Use an action to attempt to reveal both items at your location. Roll a die: if you roll #, your Suspicion increases by 1.
- Recruit (Kreisau Circle): If a revealed Ally Item Tile is at your location, roll a die. On a 1, 2, or 3, you recruit the ally, removing the tile and adding a new ally to the Circle.
Important notes: Horst Kopkow blocks the use of items in his space. Recruited allies offer single-use abilities that do not count as an action.
5. End of Game and Scoring
The game ends according to the victory or defeat conditions of the base game, with the following additions:
- Defeat (Horst Kopkow): If the Encounter Cards deck runs out and you need to draw another card, the game is lost immediately, as Kopkow has concluded his investigation.
- Missions (Red Orchestra): Completed missions are placed in the Successful Missions slot. Each completed mission allows you to add one die to all future Plots.
- Group Status (Kreisau Circle): When attempting a Plot, apply the effect of the lowest occupied space on the Ally Board. The success of plans is more difficult at the beginning and becomes easier as the circle of allies is filled.
6. Tips for Winning
- Ally Management: In the Kreisau Circle module, focus on recruiting at least 4 allies. Plots are significantly more difficult until this milestone is reached.
- Mission Protection: In Red Orchestra, placing a second Teleprinter of the same color does not reveal a new mission, but it protects the current mission from being discarded if a deputy or Hitler visits the location.
- Avoid Kopkow: Since Horst Kopkow blocks the use of items in his space, plan your routes to avoid the location where he is positioned, especially if you need to make deliveries or reveal critical items.
