Objective of the Game

Welcome to the whimsical world of Dixit: Odyssey! In this game, your goal is to use your imagination and intuition to score points. You'll be telling stories, guessing which image belongs to the storyteller, and even subtly influencing others' votes. The player who best navigates this dreamlike journey and reaches 30 points first will be crowned the winner!

Preparation (Setup)

Getting started with Dixit: Odyssey is as easy as pie. Here's how to set up your game:
  1. Assemble the Scoreboard: Take the two parts of the scoreboard and fit them together. Place this beautiful board in the center of your table.
  2. Choose Your Rabbit and Voting Board: Each player picks a voting board and a matching colored wooden rabbit. Place your rabbit on the "0" space of the scoreboard.
  3. Shuffle and Deal Image Cards: Take all 84 stunning image cards and give them a good shuffle.
    • For a game with 3 to 6 players, deal 6 image cards to each player.
    • For a 3-player game, each player gets 7 image cards.
    • For Dixit Party (6 to 12 players), deal 5 image cards to each player.
    • For Team Dixit (6, 8, 10, or 12 players), deal 4 image cards to each player.
Keep your image cards secret from other players! The remaining cards form the draw pile.
  4. Distribute Voting Tokens:
    • In a game with 3 to 6 players, each player takes 1 voting token (any color).
    • In a game with 7 to 12 players, each player takes 2 voting tokens (any color).
    • For Dixit Party, each player takes a green voting token. The first storyteller also takes a red voting token.

The Turn of Play

Each turn in Dixit: Odyssey revolves around a player becoming the storyteller. Here's how a turn unfolds:
  1. The Storyteller's Tale:
    • One player becomes the storyteller for the turn. (The first storyteller is the first player to think of something to say!)
    • The storyteller looks at the image cards in their hand. They choose one card and think of something to say about it. This can be a word, a phrase, an onomatopoeia, a line from a song, a movie title, a proverb – anything!
    • The storyteller says their chosen phrase out loud, without revealing their card.
    • Special Rule for Dixit Party: The storyteller says something out loud *before* looking at their cards. What they say has no meaning in regards to one of their own cards.
  2. Handing Images to the Storyteller:
    • The other players (or teammates in Team Dixit) choose an image card from their hand that they believe best illustrates what the storyteller has said.
    • They pass their chosen image card face-down to the storyteller, making sure no one else sees it.
    • Special Rule for 3-player game: Players (except the storyteller) each hand in two image cards.
    • Special Rule for Dixit Party: Each player, including the storyteller, chooses an image from their hand that best illustrates what the storyteller has said and passes it to the storyteller.
    • Special Rule for Team Dixit: The storyteller's teammate hands the storyteller an image. The two players of each other team agree on which of them will hand an image to the storyteller (they can talk, but not show cards).
    • The storyteller shuffles all the received image cards with their own chosen card.
    • Finally, the storyteller reveals these shuffled cards randomly on the numbered image spaces (1 to 12) on the scoreboard.
  3. Finding the Storyteller's Image: The Vote!
    • The goal for the other players is to find the storyteller's image among those revealed.
    • Each player (except the storyteller) secretly votes for the image they believe is the storyteller's. They do this by placing their voting token on the corresponding number on their voting board.
    • Important: You cannot vote for your own image!
    • Special Rule for 7 or more players: Each player may, if they wish, vote for a second image using their second voting token to increase their chance of success.
    • Special Rule for Dixit Party: Each player (including the storyteller) secretly votes using their green vote token for the image they believe best represents what the storyteller has said. The storyteller also secretly votes for one of the exposed image cards with their red vote token. Players are allowed to vote for their own image cards in Dixit Party.
    • Once everyone has voted, all players reveal their voting boards, and the storyteller reveals which was their image.
    • Special Rule for Team Dixit: Neither a player who has given the storyteller an image nor the storyteller can take part in the vote.
  4. End of Turn:
    • Each player refills their hand back up to 6 image cards (or 7 for a 3-player game, 5 for Dixit Party, 4 for Team Dixit). If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discarded cards to form a new one.
    • The player to the left of the previous storyteller becomes the new storyteller for the next turn.

End of Game and Scoring

Let's see who has the most imaginative mind!

Scoring

Points are awarded after each voting phase:
  • If all players find the storyteller’s image, OR if no player finds it:
    • The storyteller scores 0 points.
    • The other players each score 2 points.
  • In any other case (some players found it, some didn't):
    • The storyteller scores 3 points.
    • Any player who found the storyteller’s image scores 3 points.
  • Bonus Points for Other Players:
    • Each player (other than the storyteller) scores 1 bonus point for each vote earned by their image, up to a maximum of 3 bonus points.
  • Special Scoring for 7 or more players:
    • The above rules apply.
    • Players who voted for only one image score 1 extra point if they have found the storyteller’s image.
  • Special Scoring for Dixit Party:
    • Each player scores as many points as the number of players (themselves included) who have voted for the same image as they did, up to a limit of 5 points maximum.
    • Players who voted for the image that the storyteller selected with their red token score no points.
    • A player who is the only one to vote for an image scores no points.
Players move their rabbit token along the score track according to the points they've gained.

End of the Game

The game concludes when:
  • A player reaches or exceeds 30 points at the end of a turn. The player with the most points wins! In case of a tie, the tied players share the victory.
  • Special Rule for Dixit Party and Team Dixit: The game ends when each player has been the storyteller once. The player (or team) with the most points wins. For longer games, you can increase the number of times a player must be storyteller.

Tips for Winning

Want to master the art of Dixit? Here are a couple of pointers to get you started:
  1. As the Storyteller, Be Just Right: The trick is to be neither too obvious nor too obscure. If your clue is too clear, everyone will guess your card, and you'll get no points. If it's too vague, no one will guess, and again, no points for you! Aim for a clue that a few people will understand, but not everyone.
  2. As a Guesser, Think Like the Storyteller: When it's not your turn to be the storyteller, try to put yourself in their shoes. What kind of clue would they give for their cards? Also, consider what kind of card *you* can play that might trick others into thinking it's the storyteller's card. The more votes your card gets, the more bonus points for you!
