Game Objective

Get ready to embark on a journey of pure imagination and intuition with **Dixit**! The objective is simple, yet challenging: as the **Storyteller**, you want *some*, but not *all*, of the other players to guess your card. As a **player**, you need to be perceptive to identify the Storyteller's card, and at the same time, cunning enough to make others vote for your own card. The player who accumulates the most points throughout the game will be the grand winner!

Setup

Let's set up the table for the fun to begin!
  1. First, each player chooses a **wooden rabbit** of their preferred color and places it on space **0 (zero)** of the **score track** (which is inside the game box).
  2. Shuffle the **84 image cards** and deal **6 cards** to each player. Remember: your cards are secret! Always keep them hidden from other players.
  3. The remaining cards form the **draw pile**, which should be placed face down in the center of the table.
  4. Next, distribute the **voting tokens** according to the number of participants:
    • For **4 players**, each takes **4 voting tokens** (numbered 1 to 4).
    • For **5 players**, each takes **5 voting tokens** (numbered 1 to 5).
    • For **6 players**, each takes **6 voting tokens** (numbered 1 to 6).
All set? Let the magic begin!

Game Turn

A turn in Dixit is a cycle of creativity, deduction, and voting. Let's see how it works:

Choosing the Storyteller

In the first turn, to decide who will be the **Storyteller**, all players look at their cards. The first to find an inspiring phrase for one of their images announces that they will be the initial Storyteller. In subsequent turns, the Storyteller will be the player to the left of the current Storyteller, proceeding clockwise.

The Storyteller's Phrase

The **Storyteller** chooses one of the **6 image cards** they have in hand and, without showing it to anyone, says aloud a phrase associated with that image. Creativity is the limit! The phrase can be:
  • Just one word.
  • Many words.
  • A sound.
  • An invented phrase.
  • A quote from an existing work (poem, song, saying, etc.).
The secret is to find a phrase that is neither too obvious nor too abstract.

Submitting Cards to the Storyteller

After hearing the Storyteller's phrase, the other players (not the Storyteller) choose, from their **6 cards**, the one that, in their opinion, best represents the phrase spoken. Each player hands this card to the Storyteller, without others seeing it. The Storyteller then combines their own card with the cards received from the other players. They shuffle all these cards and place them face up on the table, forming a row from left to right. The leftmost card is number 1, the next is number 2, and so on.

Finding the Storyteller's Card: The Vote

Now it's the moment of truth! The goal of the players (except the Storyteller) is to discover which of the cards revealed on the table is the Storyteller's. Each player takes their **voting tokens** and, secretly, chooses the token with the number of the card they believe to be the Storyteller's. Place this token face down in front of you. Remember: **you cannot vote for your own card!** When everyone has voted, the tokens are revealed simultaneously and placed face up on the corresponding images. Finally, the Storyteller reveals which was their image.

Scoring

Scoring is calculated as follows:
  • If **all** players discover the Storyteller's image, **OR** if **no** player discovers it:
    • The Storyteller **does not gain points**.
    • The other players gain **2 points each**.
  • In other cases (i.e., if *some* players guess correctly, but not all):
    • The Storyteller gains **3 points**.
    • Players who guessed the Storyteller's card gain **3 points**.
  • Additionally, each player (with the exception of the Storyteller) scores **1 point for each vote** their card received.
Players move their rabbits on the **score track** the number of spaces corresponding to the points they gained.

End of Turn

To end the turn and prepare for the next, each player draws a card from the **draw pile** to have **6 cards** in hand again. The new Storyteller is the player seated to the left of the current Storyteller.

End of Game and Scoring

The game of Dixit ends when the **last card from the draw pile is drawn**. The player who has accumulated the most points on the **score track** throughout the game is declared the grand winner!

Tips for Winning

Want to become a Dixit master? Pay attention to these tips:
  1. The Storyteller's Secret: Balance is Everything! As the Storyteller, your phrase needs to be a happy medium. If it's too obvious, everyone will guess it and you won't score. If it's too abstract, no one will guess it and you'll also be without points. The challenge is to create a phrase that is enigmatic enough for *some* players to decipher, but not all. Think about emotions, sensations, or subtle details of the image.
  2. The Art of Deceiving (and Guessing): As a player, when choosing your card to give to the Storyteller, try to select one that fits the phrase, but that can also "trick" other players into voting for it, thinking it's the Storyteller's. At the same time, pay attention to the others' cards and try to put yourself in the Storyteller's shoes to guess which is their *true* card.
  3. Inspiration Will Come with Practice: At first, it might seem difficult to find phrases or choose the right cards. Don't worry! Dixit is a game that improves with practice. After a few turns, inspiration will flow more easily, and you'll start to get the hang of how people think and associate images.
