Game Objective

In Everdell: Newleaf, you are a village builder in the Everdell Valley, and Newleaf is the first official village, a thriving location full of opportunities. Your goal is to attract ambitious visitors, make strategic reservations, and travel further with tickets to build the most prosperous village the Everdell Valley has ever seen. The victory condition is to have the highest score at the end of the game.

Setup

The setup for Newleaf is similar to the base game Everdell, with a few additions:

  1. Place the Newleaf Train Station Board to the right of the main board.
  2. Shuffle the Critter and Construction cards with the Newleaf symbol together with the main deck.
  3. Shuffle the Visitor cards. Divide the deck into two face-up piles on the visitor platform of the Train Station Board.
  4. Place 3 cards from the main deck face-up on the Train Station Board.
  5. Place the Carriage Tokens in the bag. Draw 3 tokens and place one in each empty carriage space on the Train Station.
  6. Give each player 3 Gold Occupied Tokens. (Solo Mode: Ragwort does not receive these components).
  7. Give each player a Ticket with the Outbound side face-up. (Solo Mode: Ragwort does not receive a Ticket).
  8. Give each player a Reservation Token with the "-" side face-up. (Solo Mode: Ragwort does not receive a Reservation Token).
  9. The 3 Newleaf Forest cards can be shuffled into the deck with the other Forest cards.
  10. The Newleaf Special Event cards can be added according to your choice (shuffle with all others, draw 2 from Newleaf and 2 from the base game, or choose only Newleaf ones).
  11. The 2 additional Newleaf Basic Events are placed in their designated spaces on the main board.

Option for Newleaf Cards: To add only the Newleaf cards to the base game, remove the two Locomotive cards and shuffle the Newleaf Critter and Construction cards into the main deck. Give each player 3 Gold Occupied Tokens.

Game Flow

The game progresses in turns, where players allocate their Workers to perform actions. The game continues until all players have allocated all their Workers and can no longer perform actions. After this, the game enters the Production phase, where players receive resources and cards based on the cards in their villages. The game ends after the third season (summer).

Actions and How to Play

During your turn, you can perform one of the following actions:

  • Allocate a Worker: Place one of your Workers in an available location to perform the associated action.
  • Play a Card: Pay the card's cost and place it in your village. Newleaf Critter and Construction cards require the use of Gold Occupied Tokens, unless otherwise specified.
  • Use a Card's Ability: Some cards in your village have abilities that can be activated.
  • Use a Ticket: As an action on your turn, you can flip your Outbound Ticket to move an allocated Worker to another location. You can permanently discard your Return Ticket to move an allocated Worker to another location at any time after preparing for summer.
  • Reserve a Card: Use your Reservation Token to take any card from the Meadow or Train Station and place it face-up under your token. On a future turn, you can play this reserved card for 1 less resource.

Newleaf Train Station Specific Locations:

  • Train Station Cards: Function like Meadow cards and can be played on your turn. When playing a Train Station card, you receive the reward indicated on the Carriage Token next to the card. After receiving the reward, remove the Carriage Token and draw a replacement from the bag. Replenish the played card with a new one from the main deck.
  • Hillock: Allocating a worker here allows you to choose any 3 cards from the Meadow and/or Train Station, discard them, draw 3 new cards from the Meadow and/or Train Station to your hand, and receive the reward indicated on 1 of the Carriage Tokens.
  • Visitors: Allocating a worker at the Train Station allows you to receive a Visitor. Choose a face-up Visitor card, discard it, place one of the 2 face-up Visitor cards in your village, and receive the reward from a Carriage Token. Visitor cards provide points at the end of the game if the requirements are met.

Newleaf Cards:

Newleaf Critter and Construction cards are played like normal cards, but require the use of Gold Occupied Tokens. You can use a maximum of 3 Gold Occupied Tokens. If you discard a card with a Gold Occupied Token on it, you do not recover it.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends after the third season (summer). Players then calculate their scores based on:

  • Points from Critter and Construction cards in their village.
  • Points from Visitor cards whose requirements have been met.
  • Points from Events.
  • Points from Scoring Tokens.
  • Points from card abilities that grant end-game points.

The player with the highest score wins.

Tips for Winning

  • Manage your Gold Occupied Tokens: Use your Gold Occupied Tokens wisely, as they are limited and essential for playing the new Newleaf cards.
  • Take Advantage of the Train Station: The cards available at the Train Station and the rewards from the Carriage Tokens can offer valuable opportunities to accelerate your development or gain resources.
  • Plan your Reservations: Using the Reservation action can ensure you have access to important cards in the future, at a reduced cost.
