Objective of the Game

In Explorers of Navoria: Forgotten Lands, players take on the role of explorers venturing into new, mysterious continents. Your goal is to navigate these lands, interact with different species, and manage resources to become the most successful explorer. Victory is determined by the highest score at the end of the game, achieved through fulfilling contracts, exploring territories, and gaining the favor of species.

Setup

To set up the expansion, first follow the setup instructions in the base game rulebook, then perform these additional steps:

  1. Shuffle all goal cards and draw 3, placing them beside the board in a random order. Return unused cards to the box.
  2. Shuffle all exploration tiles and draw 3, placing them face up over the exploration bonus areas on the three continents at random. Keep the rest in a stack.
  3. Shuffle the deck of grey townsfolk cards. Place them below the main board. Reveal the top 3 cards to create a display below the base game cards.
  4. Place the new location overlay tile in the space to the bottom right of the town area of the board.
  5. Place the grey action tokens in the bag. (Note: In a 2-player game, only place 2 grey tokens in the bag and remove one of each other color token).
  6. Randomly select three species tokens and place one on the final space of each exploration track. Return the unused token to the box.
  7. Place the contract tokens in a pile near the game board.
  8. Player Setup: Randomly select a number of faction tiles and skill tiles equal to the number of players plus one. Players pick a faction tile first (starting with the first player); then, in reverse turn order, players pick a skill tile.

Game Flow

The game follows the standard structure of the base game, but with specific rules for the expansion depending on the number of players:

  • 4-Player Game: The recruitment phase ends when all players have taken 4 cards.
  • 5-Player Game: The recruitment phase ends when all players have taken 3 cards. (Note: A 5th player requires the expansion).
  • Return Phase: During this phase, all exploration tiles are removed from the board and shuffled together. Then, 3 are randomly placed out on the board to prepare for the next round.

Actions and How to Play

Players use action tokens to perform various tasks. This expansion introduces several new elements:

Contract Tokens & Skills

You can spend contract tokens to use your skill(s). Each skill can only be used once per round; place a contract token on the tile to cover the skill used, and remove them during the return phase.

  • Recruit Phase Skill: Swap one card in your tableau with any card on display. The card from your tableau goes into the row you took from, regardless of color. No immediate effects are gained.
  • Gather Phase Skill: Draw an additional action token from the bag. You may still only use 1 action token; place the 2 unused tokens in the town.
  • Income Phase Skill: Consulte el manual para detalles sobre esta sección.

Exploration Tiles

These tiles provide new rewards when reached:

  • 1st Place: Gain 2 goods (specifically 1 goods for each soldier (red) card in your tableau).
  • 2nd Place (3+ players): Gain 3 goods.
  • 3rd Place (4+ players): Gain 4 goods.
  • Contract Reward: Gain a contract token.

Collector Cards (Grey)

These are multi-color cards that help two different trades at the same time, but they do not give favour with any species. When scoring, count both colors shown at the bottom of the card.

Species Tokens

If you are the first player to reach the final space of a territory's exploration track, take the species token from there. This counts as an extra icon of that species and you immediately gain 1 contract token.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends when the specific trigger is met (refer to the base game rules). Scoring includes the following criteria from the expansion:

  • Goal Cards: The leftmost face-up goal card is scored at the end of the income phase. Each player can score it once.
  • Unused Contract Tokens: Each is worth 1 point.
  • Species Tokens: Each counts as an additional icon of that species.
  • Favour: Each card matching your favour tile gives an additional point.
  • Exploration Ties: In the income phase, if your exploration marker is tied with another player, you win the tie.
  • Exploration End: Each time an explorer reaches the end of an exploration track, score an additional point.

Tips for Winning

  • Utilize Contract Tokens: Use your contract tokens strategically during the recruitment, gather, or income phases to activate powerful skills.
  • Prioritize Species Tokens: Being the first to reach the end of an exploration track provides both a species token (extra icon) and an immediate contract token.
