Step by step
1. Game Objective
In Firefly: The Game – Blue Sun, players take on the role of captains seeking fortune and glory on the edge of the Verse. The goal is to explore the new Rim region, complete risky jobs, manage your crew and ship, and overcome the challenges posed by the Alliance and the Reavers. Victory is achieved by fulfilling the objectives defined by the Story Cards and Setup Cards chosen for the game.
2. Setup
To set up the game, follow these steps:
- Board: Position the new map section (10" x 20") on the left side of the original Firefly: The Game board.
- Reaver Ships: Place one Reaver Ship in each of the three sectors of Reaver Space (around Burnham), forming a blockade.
- Decks: Use the new Rim Navigation Cards for the Rim region. Replace the old cards from the Rim Navigation Deck (1 Reaver Cutter, 1 Reaver Lure, and 8 Hunting Reavers) with the 10 new cards provided.
- Starting Locations: If the Story Card requires it, players must place their Starting Location tokens on sectors with planets (except supply or contact planets). Ships begin the game at their respective Starting Locations.
- Components: Distribute the Supply Cards, Job Cards, and Tokens as indicated by the Setup Cards.
3. Game Flow
The game follows the turn and round structure of the base game, with the following additions:
- Movement: When flying through the Rim, use the Rim Navigation Deck. Remember: you are never allowed to move diagonally between Sectors.
- Alert Markers: Whenever a Reaver Ship or an Alliance Cruiser moves, they leave an Alert Marker in the sector they vacated.
- Resolving Alerts: When entering a sector with Alert Markers during a Fly action, you must resolve the Alert Warning (by rolling a die) before drawing a new Navigation Card.
4. Actions and How to Play
In addition to standard actions, this expansion introduces specific mechanics:
- Working with Lord Harrow: By gaining the trust of Lord Harrow, you can purchase any amount of cargo for $300 and receive a $500 bonus when completing smuggling or delivery jobs with him.
- Big Damn Challenges (Mr. Universe): You can perform the Work action for Mr. Universe and obtain Big Damn Challenge Cards. These cards must be attached to existing jobs (except piracy or bounty jobs). You must fulfill the requirements of both the original job and the challenge to receive the extra reward.
- Trading: With the expansion, it is possible to transfer credits to another player at any time, regardless of location. Trading goods, crew, gear, or ship upgrades requires both captains to be in the same sector.
- Long-Range Scanner: This ship upgrade allows you to resolve Alert Markers in adjacent sectors during the Fly action.
5. End of Game and Scoring
Consult the manual for details on this section.
6. Tips for Winning
- Risk Management: Avoid wandering through sectors with Reaver Alert Markers, as the chance of attracting a Reaver Ship to your location is high and can interrupt your turn.
- Hand Optimization: By gaining the trust of Mr. Universe, your hand limit increases by 2 cards. Use this extra space to accumulate Job Cards and better plan your jobs.
- Take Advantage of the Rim: The Uroboros Belt offers new job opportunities. Plan your routes to collect resources in these mineral-rich areas, but be prepared for the unique dangers of the Rim.
