Objective of the Game
Welcome to the exciting world of real estate! In **For Sale**, you're not just buying properties; you're becoming the savviest real estate mogul at the table. Your goal is to **purchase the most valuable properties with the least amount of money** during the bidding phase, and then **sell those properties for the highest-valued Currency Cards** in the selling phase. The player who has earned the most money from their **Currency Cards** and any leftover **Coins** at the end of the game will be crowned the richest and win! It's a fast-paced game of bidding, bluffing, and outguessing your rivals.Preparation (Setup)
Getting ready to play **For Sale** is quick and easy! Here's how to set up your game:- First, separate the cards into two distinct piles: **Property Cards** and **Currency Cards**.
- Shuffle each pile thoroughly.
- Set the **Currency Cards** aside for now; they'll be used in the second half of the game.
- Place the **Property Cards** face down to form a deck.
- Now, let's distribute the starting money:
- With 3-4 players, each person receives two **$2,000 Coins** and fourteen **$1,000 Coins**.
- With 5-6 players, each person receives two **$2,000 Coins** and ten **$1,000 Coins**.
- Finally, adjust the card decks based on the number of players:
- With three players, remove six **Property Cards** and six **Currency Cards** from the game without looking at them. These are discarded back into the box.
- With four players, remove two **Property Cards** and two **Currency Cards**. These are also discarded back into the box.
The Game Turn
**For Sale** is played in two distinct phases: **Buying Properties** and **Selling Properties**.Phase 1: Buying Properties
This is where the bidding wars begin!- Setup for Bidding: Turn face up a number of **Property Cards** equal to the number of players. For example, in a four-player game, you'll turn up four **Property Cards**. All of these face-up properties will now be auctioned.
- Starting the Bid: The player who lives in the largest house (a fun way to pick the first player!) begins by laying down any number of their **Coins** onto the table as their bid.
-
Bidding or Passing: Play continues clockwise. The next player must decide whether to **bid** or **pass**.
- If you Bid: Your bid amount must be more than the previous bid. You'll lay down additional **Coins** to increase the current bid.
- If you Pass: If you decide to pass, you immediately take the **Property Card** that remains on the table with the **lowest value**. You also get to take back half of your previously bid money (rounded down). For example, if you bid $3,000 and then pass, you take back $1,000. The rest of your bid money is returned to the bank and is out of the game.
-
Winning a Property: Bidding continues around the table until all players but one have passed.
- The last remaining bidding player takes the **highest-valued property** from the current set, but pays the full amount of their bid to the bank.
- Remember, it's not necessary to bid anything to gain the least valuable property. You can simply **pass**, pay nothing, and secure the least valuable property at no charge!
- Secret Money: A crucial tip: **Keep your money secret!** Don't let your opponents know exactly how many **Coins** you have left.
- Next Round: Purchased properties are placed face down in front of the player who bought them. The player who took the most valuable property in the previous auction turns over the next set of **Property Cards** for auction and continues play by bidding or passing.
- End of Phase 1: This continues until all of the **Property Cards** have been sold. When all **Property Cards** are gone, Phase 1 is finished. Any unused **Coins** are kept by the players, as they will be worth their face value at the end of the game.
Phase 2: Selling Properties
Now it's time to turn those properties into cold hard cash!- Setup for Selling: As in Phase 1, turn face up a number of **Currency Cards** equal to the number of players.
- Choosing a Property to Sell: Each player takes their purchased **Property Cards** into their hand. Then, each player secretly selects one **Property Card** from their hand and places it face down in front of them.
- Simultaneous Reveal: Once all players have their face-down **Property Card** ready, all players turn over their **Property Cards** simultaneously!
-
Claiming Currency:
- The player who played the most valuable **Property Card** takes the highest-valued **Currency Card**.
- The player who played the second most valuable **Property Card** takes the second highest-valued **Currency Card**, and so on.
- Discarding Properties: The **Property Cards** that were just played are then discarded from the game.
- Repeat: This process repeats until all players have sold all of their properties.
Game End and Scoring
The game concludes when all players have sold all of their properties.- Calculate Your Wealth: Players add up the values of their collected **Currency Cards** and any remaining **Coins** they have.
- Determine the Winner: The player with the most money wins the game!
- Tie-breaker: In case of a tie, the player with the most remaining **Coins** wins.
Tips for Winning
Want to be the top real estate tycoon? Here are a couple of pointers to get you started:- Manage Your Money Wisely in Phase 1: It's tempting to bid high for the best properties, but remember, you want to get them for the *least amount of money*. Sometimes, passing early to snag a low-value property cheaply, or even for free, can save your **Coins** for later, more crucial bids.
- Bluff and Outguess in Phase 2: The selling phase is all about predicting your opponents. Try to anticipate which **Property Cards** they might play. If you think everyone else will play high cards, playing a medium card might get you a better **Currency Card** than if you played your absolute lowest. Conversely, if you have a really high property, consider holding it back until you think others have played their best, ensuring you grab a top **Currency Card**.
