Hey there, board game enthusiasts! Ready to don your white coat and step into Ancient Rome? In Galenus, you take on the role of an aspiring physician aiming to impress the legendary master Galen, a figure whose medical writings dominated Western science for over 1300 years. The game plunges you into Imperial Rome, where medicine was a blend of science, art, and, let's be honest, a good dose of showmanship and rivalry.
Here's how it works: it's a worker placement game with a twist. You plan up to six actions, but the clever part is deciding *when* to resolve them. While some players are still strategizing their next moves, you could already be reaping the rewards of your decisions. Want to treat patients and gain knowledge about the four humors? Publish medical works to gain renown? Acquire rare herbs to aid your practice? Rejuvenate in the baths to recharge your own health? Or perhaps adopt a new philosophy? All these options are on the table!
At the end of each year (or round), medical contests take place, testing your skills and knowledge. It's time to expend your focus and learning to gain reputation. Whoever publishes enough notable works, or otherwise makes the biggest impact, might just earn Galenus's respect and enter his inner sanctum. The goal is to become the best among the best, the 'primus inter pares', and earn the master's favor. Across five rounds, the competition is fierce to see who will become Galenus's favored student. Prepare for a historical and medical immersion, with a dash of strategy and competition!
