Game Objective
The objective for the teenagers is to find clues, discover who the monster is, and capture it. The monster, on the other hand, seeks to kill all the teenagers. The game is won by the teenagers when the monster is revealed and captured using the correct clues. If the monster wins, it happens when all teenagers are dead or only one is left alive (besides the monster) for more than two rounds.
Setup
To set up the game, follow these steps:
- Each player receives 1 player booklet and 1 character description card.
- Two teenager cards are set aside for each player. One of them is exchanged for a monster card. The cards are shuffled and dealt.
- Players place their cards in their booklets face down. The player with the monster card will be the monster for the round.
- Remove all teenager ability cards not in play from the deck.
- Each player receives 4 ability cards (unrevealed). The remaining deck is shuffled with some clue cards and placed in the center as the draw deck.
- The tokens (magnifying glass, hourglass, flashlight, vest) are placed next to the table card.
Game Flow
The game progresses in rounds, with each player taking two actions per turn. The Round Investigator opens the table card at the end of the round, revealing the actions to be executed in the order they are opened. The Investigator passes the magnifying glass to the player on their right in the next round.
At the start of the game, the last player to visit a haunted house picks up the magnifying glass and becomes the Investigator. Actions are performed in the order indicated by the table card, with the Investigator deciding in case of ambiguity.
Actions and How to Play
Each player is entitled to two actions per round:
- Ability Action: Use a character's ability (see Teenagers, page 27).
- Another action: Choose between:
- Drawing a card from the draw deck.
- Trading a card with another player (except clues).
- Playing a visible action (see Card Types, page 13).
At the end of their turn, the player must place a card on top of the table card. If they have more than 5 cards in hand, they must discard down to 5.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends under two conditions:
- Teenager Victory: The monster is revealed and captured with 3 clues of the same color or 2 clues of the same color + 1 wild card.
- Monster Victory: All teenagers die or only one is left alive (besides the monster) for more than two rounds.
The manual does not specify detailed scoring criteria. Consult the manual for details on this section.
Tips for Winning
- Use the Investigator role to control the order of actions and strategically reveal clues.
- Manage your clues to avoid wasting wild cards on failed capture attempts.
- Monitor the monsters and their powers to anticipate threats, especially in modes with multiple monsters.
