How to Play Hive: The Mosquito

Preparation (Setup)

The Mosquito pieces can be added to the standard Hive set. Each player receives one Mosquito piece. They are placed into play in the same way as the other pieces.

Actions and How to Play

The Mosquito piece does not have a movement ability of its own. Once in play, a Mosquito can take on the movement ability of any creature, of any color, with which it is in contact at the start of its movement. This means its movement characteristics continuously change throughout the game.

If a Mosquito is touching multiple pieces, it can move in the same way as any of the pieces it touches. For example, a Mosquito adjacent to a Grasshopper and an Ant can jump like a Grasshopper or move around the perimeter like an Ant. On the next turn, the Mosquito will move according to the rules of any of the insects with which it is in contact.

A stack with a Beetle on top counts as a Beetle for the Mosquito. If a Mosquito is next to a Beetle stacked on another piece, it will move like the Beetle and not like the piece underneath.

Mosquito Movement Exceptions:

• If a Mosquito is only touching another Mosquito at the start of its movement, it cannot move.
• If a Mosquito is moved as a Beetle to the top of the Hive, it will continue to move as a Beetle until it descends.
