Objective of the Game

Welcome, fellow adventurers, to the dense jungles of Karuba! In this thrilling race, you'll guide your team of intrepid explorers through the wilderness, forging paths to ancient temples and collecting precious treasures. Your ultimate goal is to be the player who best navigates the jungle, collects the most valuable loot, and ultimately, emerges victorious with the highest score!

Preparation (Setup)

Getting ready for your Karuba adventure is straightforward. Here's how to set up your game:

  1. Each player takes a personal jungle board.
  2. Each player receives a set of 36 unique jungle path tiles.
  3. Place the four different colored explorer pawns (representing adventurers like Kentucky Smith, Mara Loft, and Nathan Jake) on their corresponding colored starting spaces on your board.
  4. Place the four matching colored temple tokens on their designated temple spaces on your board.
  5. Distribute the various treasure tokens (gold, gems, etc.) randomly across the designated treasure spots on each player's board. Make sure each player has the same treasure setup.
  6. Designate one player as the "expedition leader" for the first round. This player will be responsible for drawing and announcing the path tiles.

The Game Turn

Karuba plays out over a series of turns, where all players act simultaneously based on a single drawn tile. Here's how a turn unfolds:

  1. The expedition leader shuffles their set of 36 jungle path tiles and draws one tile, announcing its number to all other players.
  2. All other players then find the exact same numbered tile from their own set of 36 tiles.
  3. Once everyone has the correct tile, each player must choose one of two actions with that tile:
    • Place the Tile: You can place the drawn path tile onto any empty space on your jungle board. The goal is to create continuous paths for your explorers. You can rotate the tile in any direction before placing it.
    • Discard the Tile for Movement: Instead of placing the tile, you can discard it from your hand to move one of your explorer pawns. Each discarded tile allows an explorer to move a certain number of spaces along already placed paths. The number of movement points gained from discarding a tile is determined by the tile itself (though the specific values are not detailed in the provided context, assume there's a clear indication on the tile).
  4. If an explorer lands on a space containing a treasure token, they immediately collect it.
  5. If an explorer reaches a temple token of their matching color, they immediately collect it.

Players continue taking turns in this manner, drawing and placing/discarding tiles, until the game ends.

End of Game and Scoring

The game of Karuba concludes when one of two conditions is met:

  • One player has successfully reached all four of their matching colored temples with their explorers.
  • All 36 jungle path tiles have been drawn and used.

Once the game ends, it's time to tally up those hard-earned points!

Players score points for:

  • Collected Treasure Tokens: Each treasure token has a specific point value (e.g., gold might be worth more than a small gem). Add up the values of all the treasure tokens you collected.
  • Reached Temple Tokens: Each temple token also has a point value. These are typically higher than treasure tokens, rewarding successful navigation to the main objectives.

The player with the highest total score is declared the ultimate jungle explorer and the winner of Karuba!

Tips for Winning

To conquer the Karuba jungle and claim victory, keep these strategic pointers in mind:

  • Prioritize Pathing: While treasures are tempting, remember that reaching your temples is crucial for high scores. Focus on creating efficient and continuous paths to your temples first.
  • Balance Placement and Movement: Don't just blindly place tiles. Sometimes, discarding a tile for crucial movement points can be more beneficial than placing a less-than-ideal path. Evaluate your board and your explorers' positions carefully.
  • Adapt to the Draw: You can't control which tile is drawn, so be flexible! Look for ways to make the best of every tile, even if it's not exactly what you hoped for.
