Objective of the Game
In Kingdomino: Age of Giants, you are an ambitious king or queen looking to expand your territory. However, the Giants have heard stories of your vast riches and are looking to stake their claim! Your goal is to strategically build your kingdom to maximize your score while managing the threat of these greedy invaders. You must try to keep them away from your lands and send them off to neighboring kingdoms, but be careful—they are easily sidetracked!
Setup
To begin, add all the components from this expansion to your existing Kingdomino or Queendomino game. Follow these steps:
- Player Components:
- 2-player game: Each player takes 2 Kings of their color, a matching Castle, and a Starting Tile to place their Castle on.
- 3 to 5-player game: Each player takes one King of their color, a matching Castle, and a Starting Tile to place their Castle on.
- Dominoes: Combine and shuffle the 48 standard Dominoes from the base game with the 12 new Dominoes from this expansion (the ones featuring Giants or footsteps). Ensure the side with numbers or letters is facing up while shuffling.
- The Tower: Place all Dominoes inside the Domino Dispenser (tower), terrain side down.
- Challenge Tiles: Shuffle the 17 Challenge Tiles thoroughly and keep them face down. Flip over the top 2 tiles; the remaining tiles in the pile will not be used for the current game.
Game Flow
The game follows the standard rules of Kingdomino or Queendomino regarding how to select and add Dominoes to your kingdom. However, the Dominoes from this expansion introduce new mechanics:
- Selection: Regardless of the number of players, you must ALWAYS pull 5 Dominoes from the Tower each round.
- Ordering: Line them up in numerical order (lowest number at the top, highest at the bottom). If Dominoes with letters (A to F) are pulled, place them in alphabetical order above the Dominoes with numbers.
- Discarding: In games with fewer than 5 players, you must discard Dominoes before selection:
- 2 or 4 players: Discard the Domino located in the center of the line.
- 3 players: Discard the 2nd and 4th Domino.
- Restriction: You cannot discard a Domino if there is at least one way to add it to your kingdom following the standard Connection Rules.
Actions and How to Play
The Dominoes from the expansion function like normal Dominoes (adding terrain and crowns), but they include special effects based on their imagery:
Dominoes Picturing Giants
These Dominoes feature a letter (A to F) and a Giant on the terrain side. When you select one:
- A Giant has invaded your kingdom.
- You MUST take a Giant Meeple and place it on any crown in your kingdom (your choice).
- If you have no crowns in your kingdom at the time, the Domino has no effect and you do not add a Giant Meeple.
Dominoes Picturing Giant's Footsteps
These Dominoes are numbered 49 to 54 and feature footsteps. When you add one:
- You may remove one Giant Meeple from your kingdom and give it to any other player.
- That player must place the Giant Meeple on any crown in their kingdom (their choice).
- If you have no Giant Meeples in your kingdom, this Domino has no effect.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends according to the standard Kingdomino or Queendomino rules. Scoring includes standard terrain/crown points plus any applicable Challenge Tiles selected at the start of the game. Additionally, consider these specific rules:
- Giant Penalty: At the end of the game, a crown covered by a Giant Meeple does not score.
- Challenge Tile Bonuses (if selected):
- Local Business Bonus: 5 points for each square around your Castle (side or diagonal) matching the pictured terrain.
- Four Corners Bonus: 5 points for each square at one or more of the 4 corners of your kingdom matching the pictured terrain.
- Harmony Bonus: 5 points if your kingdom forms a complete grid (5x5 or 7x7) with no gaps (meaning no Dominoes were discarded).
- Middle Kingdom Bonus: 10 points if your Castle is centered within your kingdom's grid.
- Lost Corner Bonus: 20 points if your Castle is located in one of the 4 corners of your kingdom.
- Tic-Tac-Toe Bonus: 10 points whenever at least 3 squares with at least one crown each are aligned vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
- Poor Man's Bonus: 10 points for every 5-square territory without a crown (only for wheat, forest, lake, or grassland).
