About the game
What you do in a play session
Labores de Bizâncio places you at the heart of the Byzantine Empire in the 4th century, where farm work and devotion to ancient gods blend into a game experience that combines trick-taking, worker placement, and resource management. You start with a hand of cards, and on each turn you decide which card to play to follow the suit or opt out, depending on the availability of locations for placing your workers. The outcome of each round is determined by Demeter’s current state – if she’s in blessing, the highest card wins; if she’s in trial, the lowest card wins. In case of a tie, the last card played wins. The round winner collects the played cards, places them face down in their area, and places a worker on a location that matches the suit of the winning card.
The available locations include: the Market (accessible with any suit) to sell goods for miliarenses; the Forest (only with Forager) to collect wild fruits or mushrooms; the Field (only with Farmer) to harvest cabbage or barley; the Pasture (only with Shepherd) to gather sheep or Angora goats; and the Shearing Hut (only with Shearer) to trade sheep for wool and meat or collect baskets. Additionally, you can perform special actions, such as offering garlands to activate Demeter’s blessing and influence the game flow.
The game ends when all cards have been played. The winner is the player with the most miliarenses; in case of a tie, the one with the most unsold goods wins; if still tied, the player who won the most rounds takes the victory; if a tie persists, the players share the win. Labores de Bizâncio demands quick decisions, careful planning, and constant adaptation, offering an engaging experience for those who enjoy tactical challenges and have an affinity for historical and agricultural themes.
With only 20 to 30 minutes of playtime, 2 to 4 players, and an average rating of 7.3 on BGG, the game is accessible for friends looking for something light yet strategic, with high-quality components and a rich historical and farming theme.
