Game Objective

Welcome to the Mix-and-Match Cup, the most anticipated tournament at the School of Bubbling Charms! In Magic Mishmash, aspiring sorcerers gather to create the most incredible, fastest, and most powerful concoctions. To do this, you'll need a sharp memory and keen eyes, as your rivals will try to disrupt you with crazy spells.

The objective is to be the first player to accumulate 4 victory points, which are represented by captured Recipe cards. Upon reaching this mark, you become the winner of the Mix-and-Match Cup!

Preparation (Setup)

Let's prepare the table for your magical adventure:

  1. Separate the 16 Recipe cards, which have "Recipes" identified on their back. Shuffle them and form a face-down pile with the spell names, next to the Cauldron card.
  2. Take the remaining Ingredient cards. For the basic mode, use the following cards:
    • 8 pumpkin cards
    • 8 mushroom cards
    • 8 beetle cards
    • 8 mandrake cards
    • 8 unicorn essence cards
    • 4 wizard cards
    • 6 thief cards
Shuffle these cards and distribute them equally among the participants. Any leftover cards are removed from the game. Each player places their cards (without looking) in a face-down draw pile in front of them.
  3. Separate the Cauldron card and place it in the center of the table, within reach of all players.

The youngest player starts the game. They must reveal the top two cards of the Recipe pile, placing them face-up in the center of the table for everyone to see, with the side showing only the Ingredients facing up.

Game Flow

The game progresses in rounds, with players revealing cards and trying to complete Recipes:

  1. Starting with the first player (the youngest), each player, on their turn, reveals the top card of their Ingredient pile, quickly flipping it over and placing it in a single, common pile in the middle of the table, face-up, near the Cauldron card.
  2. This central pile is called the Ingredient Memory pile. Players need to memorize the order and the Ingredients within it. No one can touch the pile, and only the top card is visible.
  3. When the Ingredient Memory pile has an order of Ingredient cards that exactly matches one of the Recipes available on the table (it doesn't need to follow the exact order of the Recipe, just contain all the Ingredients consecutively), the first person to slap the Cauldron card is the winner of the round.
  4. The player who slapped executes that Recipe and performs the corresponding Spell. Then, they place the card in their player area, with the spell side facing up. This card counts as 1 victory point.
  5. After a slap on the Cauldron, other players can say "TOTALUS CHALLENGUS! TOTALUS CHALLENGUS!" if they believe the player who slapped made a mistake.
    • If the player who slapped made a mistake, the challenging player wins the round's Recipe for themselves, performing the effect of that Recipe's Spell.
    • If the player who slapped was correct, the challenger must give one of their already completed Recipes (if any) to the player who slapped correctly. In this case, the effect of that Recipe's Spell is not activated again. The player who slapped might end up taking 2 Recipe cards as a prize and performing the Spell only from the current Recipe.
  6. If no one says "TOTALUS CHALLENGUS! TOTALUS CHALLENGUS!", the player who slapped simply keeps the Recipe card they just won for themselves and performs the Recipe's Spell normally.
  7. Whenever someone slaps the Cauldron, the Ingredient Memory pile is placed in the discard, and a new pile begins.
  8. A new Recipe card must be revealed, a new round begins, and the starting player becomes the player to the left of the player who made the last slap.
  9. Whenever players run out of cards, reshuffle the discard pile and redistribute the cards equally among the players.

Actions and How to Play

The main action for players is to reveal a card from their Ingredient pile and add it to the Ingredient Memory pile. Additionally, players must be attentive to slap the Cauldron when a Recipe is completed.

Performing Spells

Whenever someone manages to perform a Spell by preparing a Recipe, upon revealing the Spell on the card, they must choose another player who will receive the effect of the Spell. The player must majestically pronounce the name of the spell. The enchanted player must follow the effect until the next Recipe is captured by any player.

List of Spells and their effects:

  • Armus Rigidus: the enchanted player must keep one arm fully extended, as if the arm were petrified.
  • Smellus Fetidus: the enchanted player must cover their nose with one hand, as if smelling a horrible stench.
  • Tasteus Putridus: the enchanted player must keep making a face, as if tasting something terrible.
  • Handus Stuckus: the enchanted player must keep one hand closed, as if it were completely glued.
  • Eyeus Blinkelius: the enchanted player must keep one eye blinking rapidly, as if having a terrible itch in the eye.
  • Liceus Itchus: the enchanted player must keep scratching their head, as if infested with lice.
  • Blabus Blalabus: the enchanted player must keep repeating the sound "blablablabla," as if that were the only thing they could say.
  • Chestus Thumpus: the enchanted player must repeatedly tap their chest, as if their heart were beating faster.

Special Cards

Some special cards have effects that alter the Ingredient Memory pile:

  • Unicorn essence: is a wild card and can be used to substitute any Ingredient.
  • Wizard: when this card appears, it takes the entire Ingredient pile and places it in the discard, starting a new pile.
  • Thief: when this card appears, it steals the last Ingredient from the Ingredient pile. This means that the stolen Ingredient ceases to exist and should be ignored by all players.
  • Cat: when this card appears, it protects the pile from the next wizard that appears.
  • Dog: when this card appears, it invalidates the effect of the last thief that appeared. If there is no thief in the Ingredient pile, the dog card has no effect.
  • Double!: when this card appears, it causes the last Ingredient to be duplicated.
  • Fake Ingredient: when this card appears, it causes the next Ingredient to appear to be invalid.
  • Shield: when this card appears, it causes the last Ingredient to be protected from any threats.

End of Game and Scoring

The game continues until a player accumulates 4 points, meaning 4 captured Recipe cards. When this happens, the game ends immediately, and that player is the winner of the Mix-and-Match Cup!

Tips for Winning

  • Pay attention to the Ingredient Memory pile: the order and the Ingredients are crucial for identifying Recipes.
  • Observe the special cards: they can alter the Ingredient Memory pile unexpectedly, creating or undoing Recipes.
  • Be careful when using "TOTALUS CHALLENGUS! TOTALUS CHALLENGUS!": challenging a player who is correct can cost you one of your already earned Recipes.
