Objective of the Game
Welcome to No Thanks!, the game where less is truly more! Your ultimate goal is to end the game with the fewest points possible. Every card you take is worth its face value, but you'll be using your precious Pass tokens to strategically avoid high-scoring cards. The real trick? Collecting cards in sequential runs to dramatically reduce your score. So, get ready to make some tough decisions and outsmart your friends in this clever card game!
Preparation (Setup)
Setting up No Thanks! is quick and easy, getting you into the action in no time:
- First, decide how many rounds you want to play. The game recommends four rounds for a full experience, keeping a cumulative score. A pen and paper will be your best friends for tracking scores!
- Take the 33 Cards (numbered 3-35) and shuffle them thoroughly.
- From the shuffled deck, count out 9 cards and set them aside face-down. Do not look at these cards! They won't be used this round, adding a fun element of uncertainty.
- The remaining 24 cards form the face-down draw deck. Place it in the center of the table.
- Flip over the top card of the draw deck and place it next to the deck, face-up. This is your first active card.
- Each player takes their starting Pass tokens:
- For 3-5 players: 11 Pass tokens each.
- For 6 players: 9 Pass tokens each.
- For 7 players: 7 Pass tokens each.
- The player who most recently received a gift goes first. Let the games begin!
The Turn of Play
On your turn, you face a simple yet agonizing decision regarding the active card. You have two choices:
- Place a Pass token on the active card:
- If you don't want the current active card, simply place one of your Pass tokens from your hidden supply onto the card.
- Then, play immediately passes to the player on your left.
- Important: You cannot choose to pass if you have no Pass tokens left!
- Take the active card:
- If you decide the active card is worth taking (or you have no tokens left!), you take the card and add it to your play area in front of you, face-up.
- Crucially, you also collect all the Pass tokens currently on that card and add them to your hidden supply.
- After taking the card and tokens, you then turn over a new card from the draw deck to become the new active card.
- Your turn continues, and you must make the same decision again for this new active card. This continues until you choose to pass or run out of tokens.
When building your play area, arrange your cards face-up so everyone can see them. It's helpful to overlap cards that form a sequential run to clearly show your sets.
End of Game and Scoring
End of Round
A round concludes when a player takes the last active card, and there are no more cards left in the draw deck to replace it.
Scoring
Now for the moment of truth – tallying those points! Remember, the goal is the lowest score.
- Card Points:
- Each card in your play area is worth its face value in points.
- However, if a card is part of a sequential run (e.g., 13, 14, 15), only the lowest-valued card in that sequence counts for points. All other cards in that run are worth nothing!
- Example: If you have cards 8, 13, 14, 15, 17:
- The 8 is isolated, so it scores 8 points.
- The 13, 14, and 15 form a sequential run. Only the 13 scores, so this set is worth 13 points.
- The 17 is isolated, so it scores 17 points.
- Your total card points would be 8 + 13 + 17 = 38 points.
- Pass Token Points:
- After calculating your card points, subtract 1 point for each Pass token you have left in your hidden supply.
- Example: If you had 38 card points and 13 Pass tokens left, your final score for the round would be 38 - 13 = 25 points.
Record your scores. If this wasn't the last round, shuffle the cards and prepare for the next round!
End of Game
After the predetermined number of rounds (e.g., four rounds), total up everyone's cumulative scores. The player with the lowest overall score wins!
Tips for Winning
Mastering No Thanks! involves a blend of luck and clever strategy. Here are a few pointers to get you started:
- Don't Be Afraid to Take Cards (Sometimes): It's incredibly rare to win without taking any cards. Often, it's better to take a card with a few Pass tokens on it than to be forced to take a high-value card because you've run out of tokens. Think of those tokens as future "No Thanks!" power-ups!
- Play the Long Game with Tokens: Smart players know when to pass on a card they might actually want, anticipating that others won't want it either. Letting a card circulate one or two more times can significantly increase the number of Pass tokens you'll collect when you finally take it. Just be wary – another player might snatch it up before you get your glorious token haul!
- Mind the Missing Cards: Remember those 9 cards removed from play at the start of the round? They can create unexpected gaps in your potential sequential runs. While trying to bridge a small gap might be a good gamble, the risk of failure increases with larger gaps. You never know which cards are truly out of play!
