Game Objective
In RELOAD: Capture the Flag, two teams of two players compete in a variant of the Team Royale mode. The main objective is to capture the opposing team's flag and bring it back to your own HQ to score. The team that successfully captures the opposing flag twice first, or has more points at the end of the match, will be the winner.
Setup
To set up the game:
- Map: Select a map from the Capture the Flag Map Book.
- Tokens and Tracks:
- The Feat board and Feat Fame tokens are not used.
- Place the Flag Tokens on the HQ hexagon of each team, corresponding to the team's color.
- Add the 2 Capture the Flag Fame tokens of each color to the supply.
- Add the 6 Capture the Flag Fame tokens to the general supply.
- Add 21 HQ Event Fame tokens to the supply. Return any excess to the box.
- Cards:
- Place the Flag Equipment Cards near the play area.
- Event Cards and Feat Cards are not used.
- Starting Equipment: All players draw 2 1-star Equipment Cards, keep 1 (placing it face down in their backpack to the right of their Character Board), and discard the other.
- Starting Fame: The starting player places 1 HQ Event Fame token from the supply onto the opposing team's Fame Track. This action is not considered part of the event phase.
Game Flow
The game progresses through player turns, with specific phases to follow:
Player Turn
- Start Phase:
- Respawn: If your character is not on the board at the start of your turn, they are placed directly on your team's HQ hexagon or any adjacent unoccupied hexagon.
- Equipment Choice: Equipment choice rules remain the same, with the exception that a player cannot place the Flag Equipment Card in their backpack.
- Action Phase: During this phase, players perform their actions.
- End Phase: After the Action Phase, the event phase occurs.
Events
After a player's End Phase, and before the next player begins their turn, remove 1 HQ Event Fame token from the supply. If there are no more tokens in the supply, the game proceeds to the end game. Otherwise, check the following conditions:
- If your team's flag is on your HQ hexagon, add the removed HQ Event Fame token to your team's Fame Track.
- If your team's flag is NOT on your HQ hexagon, return the removed HQ Event Fame token to the game box.
Note: The resolution of HQ Event Fame tokens is skipped until the last player has completed their first turn. The first HQ Event will always be resolved before the first player takes their second turn.
Capture the Flag uses HQ Event Fame tokens instead of an Event card deck. The resolution timing is the same as the event deck in the basic RELOAD rules.
Actions and How to Play
During the Action Phase, players can perform various actions:
- Loot: A player on the same hexagon as the opposing team's Flag Token can perform a Loot action to pick up the flag. They remove the Flag Token from its current hexagon, place it on their Character Board, and equip the corresponding Flag Equipment Card. If the player does not have an available hand slot, they must make space at this time. A player cannot unequip an equipment card with an action die assigned to it. Each time a Flag Capture Fame token is scored, add a 3-Star Supply Crate to each Village hexagon.
- Activate:
- On an HQ hexagon, performing an Activate action allows you to capture the opposing team's flag. Place the corresponding Flag Equipment Card aside, return the Flag Token to the opposing team's HQ, and score the Flag Capture Fame token that matches the opposing team's color.
- A player who ends their turn on an HQ hexagon, regardless of team, places their lowest value Combat Line die into their defense pool.
- A player cannot teleport into or out of an HQ hexagon.
- Pass the Flag: Once per turn, before or after resolving an action, a player can give or receive the flag from their teammate. Both players adjust their equipment following the same rules described in step 1.2 of the Start Phase. A player cannot pick up the flag if they are forced to unequip an equipment card with an action die assigned.
- Drop the Flag: Once per turn, before or after resolving an action, a player carrying the opposing team's flag can drop the Flag Token on their current hexagon and place the Flag Equipment Card out of play. They can then adjust their equipment following the same rules described in step 1.2 of the Start Phase.
- Free Actions: Capture the Flag adds 2 additional options for players performing a free action. Refer to the rulebook for details on this section.
End Game and Scoring
The match ends in one of the following ways:
- A player or team reaching Superstar status. Superstars win the match immediately.
- The supply of HQ Event Fame tokens is depleted.
- At the end of the round in which a team scores their second Flag Capture Fame token.
If the match ends due to the depletion of Flag Capture or HQ Fame tokens, teams compare their fame. The team with more fame wins. In case of a tie, the team with more Flag Capture Fame tokens wins. If still tied, the team with more Event Fame tokens wins. If still tied, the teams share the victory.
RELOAD: As part of step 1 during a RELOAD resolution, if the player was carrying the team's flag, they place the Flag Equipment Card aside and place the opposing team's Flag Token on the hexagon. If an opponent is on the same hexagon, place the Flag Token on the opposing team's HQ hexagon.
Tips for Winning
- When a player carrying the opposing team's flag suffers a RELOAD, they drop the flag token on the hexagon they were on.
- Whenever a player is on the same hexagon as their team's Flag Token, and the matching Flag Equipment Card is not equipped by an opposing player, the Flag Token is automatically returned to its HQ.
