Step by step
Game Objective
In Rolling Ranch: Barns & Herds, you take on the role of a farmer who needs to rebuild your property after a hurricane destroyed the fences and scattered the animals into the forest. The goal is to rescue as many animals as possible, construct buildings, and complete missions to achieve the highest Total Score.
Setup
- Give each player a Pencil and a Farm Sheet. The sheet should start with the Day side (icon of the Sun) facing up. Alternatively, everyone can choose the Night layout (icon of the Moon).
- Place the Card A and Card B in the center of the table, side by side.
- Shuffle the 8 Mission Cards. Place one randomly below Card A and another below Card B, both with the 5-point side facing up. The remaining Mission Cards should be stored in the box.
- Place the two Animal Dice in the center of the play area.
Game Flow
The game is played simultaneously, where all players act at the same time. Each round follows this structure:
- Rolling Dice: One player rolls both Animal Dice.
- Player Actions: Each player simultaneously chooses one of the three available actions (detailed below).
- Breeding Phase: After everyone has taken their action, check if both dice show the Breeding icon in the bottom right corner. If so, Breeding occurs (see below).
- Start of Next Round: The game continues until the end-game trigger is activated.
Breeding
If both dice (BLUE and YELLOW) show the Breeding icon, each pair of identical animals in a pen will breed. The new animal is drawn in any empty Pen Space of that pen. If there are no empty spaces, Breeding does not occur.
Actions and How to Play
When taking your action, you must choose one of the three options below based on the dice results:
- Rescue Animal (BLUE Die): Draw the animal shown on the BLUE Die in a hexagonal Pen Space corresponding to the number shown on the YELLOW Die or in an X Space on your Farm Sheet.
- Rescue Animal (YELLOW Die): Draw the animal shown on the YELLOW Die in a hexagonal Pen Space corresponding to the number shown on the BLUE Die or in an X Space on your Farm Sheet.
Tip: You can draw simple shapes to represent the animals (e.g., a symbol for chicken, pig, or cow). - Collect Resources: Collect the resources shown in the top right corner of both dice to fill the lines in your Construction Area. You may choose to collect only some of the resources shown. If neither die shows resources, you may choose to do nothing.
Constructions and Buildings
When collecting resources, you assign them to the construction lines on your Farm Sheet. When a line is completed, you build the corresponding building in an empty Pen Space and receive its bonus:
- Warehouse: Upon completion, you immediately fill a Nail icon in any other incomplete construction line.
- Barn: Upon completion, you immediately rescue the animal indicated in your construction line, drawing it in any empty Pen Space.
- Greenhouse: Upon completion, you receive the number of points indicated on the Greenhouse line at the end of the game.
Pens and Bonuses
Pens are groups of hexagonal spaces. When all spaces in a Pen with a bonus are filled, the bonus is obtained immediately and must be marked on the Farm Sheet to indicate it has been applied.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends at the end of the round in which at least one player has filled all Pen Spaces on their Farm Sheet.
To determine the winner, each player sums their points based on the following criteria:
- Animal Score: Based on the number of each type of animal rescued (as per the table on the Farm Sheet).
- Greenhouse Score: Points from the Greenhouses built.
- Mission Score: Points earned by completing Mission Cards during the game.
Tiebreaker Criteria:
- The player who triggered the end of the game wins.
- If the tie persists, the player with the most Buildings wins.
- If the tie continues, all tied players share the victory.
