In 1929 you’re Captain Sofi Odessa and her crew lost at sea in a strange world. On the steamship Manticore, the crew must work together to survive: explore mysterious islands, battle creatures, and meet the locals. The goal? Find the gods’ totems, awaken the deities, and maybe return home.
Primeval Peril is a short standalone campaign for two players, but the base rules allow a 3‑4 player variant that keeps the same universe and mechanics of the Sleeping Gods line. The adventure takes place on a treacherous river winding through dense jungle, featuring new characters, stories and missions that don’t spoil the base game. The material was first released as a free print‑and‑play for Kickstarter backers, but the retail edition brings revisions, expanded narratives, streamlined gameplay and an atlas full of new maps.
The game blends cooperation, hand‑management and storytelling. Each turn requires tactical decisions: which cards to use, when to act, and how to react to changing scenarios. The narrative evolves with events that alter the river and forest dynamics, keeping tension high. The experience is immersive, with art evoking the 1920s and a classic adventure vibe, yet complex enough to challenge both newcomers and veterans. If you love exploring mysterious worlds, making team decisions, and diving into engaging stories, Sleeping Gods: Primeval Peril will delight you.
Playtime ranges from 120 to 240 minutes, depending on mission depth and decision complexity. The game works well with 1‑2 players, but the 3‑4 player variant expands the fun. A 2.69/5 rating indicates solid mechanics but a slower pace that demands patience. In short: a short but rich campaign that proves Sleeping Gods can be played at any table size without losing its cooperative and narrative essence.
