If you’ve already dived into the world of Tannhäuser and felt the base game needed more challenges, the Daedalus expansion will surprise you. Set in Crete beneath the ruins of the Palace of Knossos, the map brings the legendary Minos Labyrinth, where every corridor can hide traps, treasure, or an enemy squad ready to strike. The premise is simple: assemble a command squad, pick the safest route, and reach the center of the maze before time runs out or the opposition strengthens.
What changes in practice? Daedalus introduces one-way spaces, restricted areas that require specific abilities to cross, and four entry points that allow for different strategies. To speed movement, there’s a horizontal electric tram system that lets a character traverse the board from one end to the other in a single turn. This creates opportunities for “flank” and rapid retreat, something never seen in Tannhäuser before.
The expansion also brings six themed scenarios, each with distinct objectives: from “Rescue Prisoners” to “Temple Conquest,” including “Minotaur’s Path.” Each scenario features 64 action tokens, including new unit types, equipment, and terrain events, many inspired by the beloved “Token of the Month” markers that Tannhäuser fans adore. Players must manage their action tokens carefully, as dice rolls determine the success of attacks, defenses, and tactical maneuvers. Additionally, each player receives a variable power that can change how they position themselves on the board, whether by dominating area control or gaining movement bonuses.
In terms of components, Daedalus keeps the base’s high quality: high-resolution miniatures, a 17x13 inch board, colorful terrain tokens, and a set of six-sided dice. The playtime is around 60 minutes, making it ideal for 2 to 4 players already familiar with Tannhäuser who want something more tactical and narrative. If you enjoy blending combat strategy with labyrinth exploration, the Daedalus expansion is the next missing piece in your arsenal.
