The Quest for El Dorado: Your Ultimate Guide to Gold and Glory!

Welcome, brave adventurers, to the heart of the Amazon! Deep within these dense jungles lies the legendary city of gold, El Dorado, brimming with untold treasures. Are you ready to lead your expedition to glory? As your expert guide from BoardGameBot, I'm here to equip you with everything you need to know to conquer the wilderness and claim your rightful place as the first to reach El Dorado!

Objective of the Game

In The Quest for El Dorado, you'll slip into the role of a daring expedition leader, assembling a team of experts, acquiring valuable equipment, and meticulously planning your journey. Your ultimate goal? To be the first player to cross the border into the fabled golden city. Whoever achieves this feat first wins the game and claims all the treasure!

Preparation (Setup)

Before we embark on our grand adventure, let's get our camp set up. While the full assembly guide is in your manual, here’s a quick rundown of what you’ll need to get started:

  • Each player receives a starting deck of 8 cards, which will be your initial expedition. Make sure these are face-down and ready to draw from. Your starting deck consists of:
    • 1 Sailor
    • 3 Explorers
    • 4 Travelers
  • Place the market board and the various expedition card piles (6 different types initially) within reach of all players.
  • The player with the starting player hat token gets to kick off the race!

Remember, your deck is your expedition, and you'll be drawing from it throughout the game.

The Turn of Play

Each player's turn is a thrilling three-phase journey. The starting player completes all three phases, then the next player in turn order does the same, and so on. Here’s how it works:

  1. Phase 1 – Play cards
  2. This is where the magic happens! You can play any number of cards from your hand to either (A) move your playing piece and/or (B) buy up to 1 new card for your expedition. Each card can only be used once per turn. It's usually smart to play your movement cards first, then use any remaining cards for purchasing.

    A – Movement

The path to El Dorado is treacherous, leading through various terrains: landscape (green, yellow, blue), rubble (gray), and base camp (red). Mountains (black) are always off-limits, as are spaces already occupied by other playing pieces.

    • Landscape Spaces: To move onto a landscape space, you need to play a card that matches the space's color/symbol and has a power value equal to or higher than the space's power (indicated by the number of symbols). You can continue moving with "leftover" power, but remember to subtract what you've already spent. Important: You cannot combine multiple cards to move onto a single high-power landscape space!
    • Special Spaces (Rubble & Base Camp): These are a bit different. To move onto a rubble or base camp space, you simply play any number of cards from your hand equal to the number of symbols on the space. The identity of these cards doesn't matter!
      • Base Camp Spaces: Cards played to move onto a base camp space are not discarded; they are completely removed from the game. This is a fantastic way to "thin" your deck, getting rid of weaker cards to draw your best ones more frequently!
    • Blockades: These are obstacles that only the first player to encounter them must overcome by fulfilling their power requirement (just like moving onto a space). That player gets to keep the blockade, which can be used as a tie-breaker at the end of the game. Once removed, all players can freely enter those spaces.

    B – Buy New Cards

You can buy up to 1 new card per turn, regardless of whether you moved or not. To buy a card, you'll use the "coin" value of cards in your hand:

    • Cards with a coin symbol are worth their depicted power value in coins.
    • All other cards are worth ½ a coin each.

Play any number of cards from your hand, add up their coin values, and that's your total "money" for the turn. Choose a card from the market board (or even off-board if a spot is vacant and you can afford it) and place it face-up on your discard pile. You can't use this new card this turn, but it will eventually be shuffled into your draw pile.

    • Market Access: Initially, you choose from 6 different expedition card piles. Once all 3 cards of a pile are sold, you gain access to cards next to the market board. If there's a vacant spot on the market, you can choose any affordable expedition card, even if it's not currently on the board.
    • Item Cards: These special cards are marked with a crossed-out card symbol. They can only be played once per game. After use, they are removed from the game (returned to the box), not your discard pile! The exception is if you play an item card without using its function (e.g., for a rubble space or as ½ a coin), then it goes to your discard pile.
  3. Phase 2 – Discard played cards
  4. After you've moved and/or bought, gather all the cards you played this turn (that weren't removed from the game) and place them face up on your discard pile. If you still have cards in your hand (experts or items), you can choose to keep them for your next turn or discard them individually.

  5. Phase 3 – Draw cards
  6. Finally, draw cards from your draw pile until you have 4 cards in your hand. If your draw pile is empty, draw as many as possible, then shuffle your discard pile to form a new draw pile, and draw the remaining cards you need. Then, pass the turn to the next player!

    End of Game and Scoring

The race to El Dorado is a thrilling one, and it ends abruptly!

    • The game ends when a player reaches one of the 3 finishing spaces. This triggers the final round. That player places their playing piece on El Dorado to free up the finishing space. Each player left in that round (including the one who triggered the end) will now play their final turn. Once the round is completed, the game is over.
    • Important: If the last player of a round reaches one of the finishing spaces first, the game ends immediately.

What happens if the game is tied?

If multiple players reach El Dorado during the final round, we have a tie-breaker:

    1. The player who has collected the most blockades wins the game.
    2. If there is still a tie, the player with the highest power blockade wins.

    Tips for Victory

To give you a head start on your quest, here are a couple of tactical pointers:

    1. Thin Your Deck Wisely: Don't underestimate the power of base camp spaces! Removing weak cards from your deck allows you to cycle through your stronger cards more frequently, giving you better movement and buying options. Keep your expedition "lean" to draw your best cards with the highest power level.
    2. Balance Movement and Acquisition: While racing ahead seems tempting, remember you can only buy one card per turn. Sometimes, it's worth sacrificing a bit of movement to acquire a powerful new card from the market that will pay off in future turns. Look for cards that complement your current deck and the terrain ahead.

Now, with these instructions in hand, you are ready to embark on your own Quest for El Dorado! May your path be clear and your treasures abundant!
