Objective of the Game
In The Witcher: Path of Destiny - Legendary Monsters, players work cooperatively to defeat a Legendary Monster that roams the board and launches powerful special attacks. The goal is to reduce the Monster’s Life Points to 0 before the end of the game, without any player being eliminated by losing their last Health Point. Players complete challenges on Trail cards to gain Experience Points and use Runestone cards strategically to aid in their fight.
Preparation (Setup)
Follow these steps to set up the game:
- Place the Playmat on the table.
- Choose a Monster: Select a Legendary Monster to fight against. Place the corresponding Monster cards on the playmat, ensuring the side matches the number of players. Place Destiny tokens nearby.
- Prepare the Cards: Remove specific cards from the Main deck (2, 7, 9, 50) and place the rest on the designated spot. Fill the Pool with pairs of cards based on player count (4 spots for 1-3 players, 5 spots for 4-5 players).
- Place the Extra Experience Token next to the bottom-most filled spot. Optionally, use Lambert or Eskel Companion rules.
- Place Symbol Tokens on the table.
- Choose Characters: Select characters (excluding Dandelion) and follow their regular setup. Do not use Side Quests or Victory Point markers. Place characters on the Initiative track in order. Each player receives Health Points based on player count (5 for 1 player, 7 for 2-4 players, 8 for 5 players).
- Monster Setup: Place the Monster miniature next to the playmat. Set the Monster’s Life Points on the counter. Prepare the Monster Movement deck based on player count, shuffle it, and place it next to the playmat.
- Monster-Specific Setup: Depending on the chosen Monster, place Root tokens (for Ancient Leshen), Suffering tokens (for Hym), or the Power token (for Katakan) nearby.
Flow of the Game
The game is played in Chapters, each consisting of several turns. At the start of each Chapter, players receive Trail cards that describe challenges they must complete to gain Experience Points. Players draft cards, and after each player’s turn, the Monster activates by either moving or drawing cards to unleash an attack. Players must cooperate to reduce the Monster’s Life Points to 0 before the end of the game.
Actions and How to Play
Players can perform the following actions:
- Draft Cards: After drafting cards, the Monster activates by drawing a Monster Movement card. Depending on the card, the Monster either moves to a spot or focuses to draw cards into its Attack pool.
- Use Runestone Cards: Players can use Runestone cards strategically to gain advantages, such as exchanging cards, rearranging the Initiative track, or ignoring Monster Movement cards.
- Complete Trail Card Challenges: Players must meet the conditions on their Trail cards to gain Experience Points. Failing to meet the condition results in rolling the Monster die.
- Deal Damage: At the end of each Chapter, players count their Fight Symbols and deal damage to the Monster by deducting its Life Points.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when:
- The Monster’s Life Points are reduced to 0, resulting in a victory for the players.
- Any player loses their last Health Point, resulting in a loss for all players.
- At the end of the 3rd Chapter, if the Monster’s Life Points are not reduced to 0, players lose the game.
Players win by defeating the Monster before any of these conditions occur.
Tips for Winning

- Focus on Trail Cards: Completing Trail card challenges is crucial for gaining Experience Points and avoiding penalties.
- Use Runestones Wisely: Strategically use Runestone cards to gain advantages and mitigate the Monster’s attacks.
