Objective of the Game

In the Carnival of Chaos, players race their vehicles into a high-octane arena to collect party favor tokens, powerful super-weapons, and precious scrap. Unlike a standard game of Thunder Road: Vendetta, there is no finish line. The winner is the surviving player with the most scrap at the end of the game.

Setup

Follow the base game setup with these specific changes for the expansion:

  1. Arena and Foundation: Decide which side of the arena board you want to play with (The Haulasseum is easier; Slaytona 500 is more brutal). Place the matching side of the foundation board in the center and fit 3 road tiles into it. Place the arena board on top of the foundation board.
  2. Party Favors: Leave all base game hazard tokens in the box. Mix the party favor tokens face down. Randomly place a party favor face down on each hazard space on the road tiles and each marked party favor space on the arena board. If using starting road tiles, place party favors on all their hazard spaces.
  3. Killer Pillars: Place each killer pillar token on the space marked with its letter on the arena board. All killer pillars start with the road side up.
  4. Super-Weapons: Place a super-weapon token on each marked space on the arena board. Shuffle the super-weapon cards and place the deck face down.
  5. Tina's Turn: Shuffle the Tina’s Turn cards and place 5 of them in a face-down deck.
  6. Scrap: Create a supply of scrap tokens near the arena board.
  7. Player Components: Each player takes the Witness Me! card of their color.

Game Flow

The game follows the base game rules with the following structure:

  • Player Turns: Each round, every player takes 3 turns as normal.
  • Tina's Turn: At the end of each round, after all players have taken their turns, Turbo Tina takes a turn. Flip the top card from the Tina's Turn draw pile and resolve these 3 effects in order:
    1. SPOTLIGHT: Each player with at least one operable car in a spotlight space gains the amount of scrap shown on Tina's card.
    2. KILLER PILLARS: Flip each killer pillar token shown on Tina's card to its impassable side and immediately eliminate any cars on them. Flip all other killer pillar tokens to their road side.
    3. DECREE: Read Tina's decree. Her decree remains in effect until the end of the next round and overrules all other rules and effects.

Actions and How to Play

Movement and Shooting in the Arena

Entering the Arena: Cars may only shoot while they are on the arena board. They cannot shoot while on a road tile. When moving from a road tile into the arena, turn the car to face the direction it moved.

Arena Movement: Spaces in the arena are symmetrical. When moving an active car into an arena space that is not straight forward, turn it to face the direction it moved. When a car slams another, turn the bottom car to face the same direction as the top car.

Collecting Items

  • Super-Weapons: You collect a super-weapon when your car ENDS its movement on a super-weapon token. You can only have one super-weapon at a time.
  • Party Favors: You collect a party favor token when your car ENDS its movement on it. You can use these for various effects during your turn.

Special Actions and Cards

  • Witness Me!: Once per game, at the start of your turn, you may play this card. For the rest of that turn, you gain 1 scrap each time you shoot or slam, regardless of the result.
  • Party Favor Effects: Includes abilities like Bootleg Turn, Double Barrel, Full Throttle, Killer Pillar, Mega-Repair, and Precision.

End of Game and Scoring

The game ends immediately if Tina's draw pile is empty (at the end of round 6) or if any player is out of the game (at the end of the current round, after Tina's Turn).

Scoring: Players with at least 1 operable car count their scrap. Scrap is gained by:

  • Damaging an opposing car on your turn (+2 scrap).
  • Eliminating an opposing car on your turn (+3 scrap).
  • Being in a spotlight space during Tina's Turn.
  • Certain party favors (like Solid Gold Muffler) at the end of the game.
The player with the most scrap wins. In case of a tie, the player with the most operable vehicles wins; if still tied, the player with the most super-weapons wins; if still tied, the player with the most unused party favors wins. If a tie persists, tied players roll their movement dice until the tie is broken.

Tips for Victory

  • Scrap is everything: Unlike the base game, you aren't racing to a finish line; you are racing to accumulate the most scrap. Focus on actions that yield scrap, such as damaging or eliminating opponents.
  • Watch the Spotlight: Position your operable cars in spotlight spaces to gain guaranteed scrap during Tina's Turn.
