Step by step
1. Game Objective
In the solo mode of Tokaido, you face two Automata that replace human players. The goal is to complete the journey along the Tokaido road, accumulating points through experiences, encounters, meals, and collections. You play following the normal game rules, while the Automata follow special rules for their actions and scoring. The winner is the one who accumulates the highest score at the end of the journey.
2. Setup
Follow the normal setup instructions for 3 players and add the specifications for the Automata:
- Automaton Play Area: Reserve columns for coins, panoramas, shop, encounter, and hot spring. Leave space for meal and achievement cards.
- Pawns and Markers: Choose your color and place your Traveler pawn and marker. The Automata do not receive Traveler pawns.
- Starting Pieces: Place each Automaton's colored token in their play area and immediately score 1 point for it.
- Crossroads Expansion: If using it, choose your traveler, select 3 cards of each added type (Amulets, Legendary Items, and Calligraphy) at random, and grant 5 starting points to each Automaton.
- Automa Deck: Shuffle the 16 Automa cards and place them face down.
- Difficulty Levels: Consult the specific section to adjust the challenge, if desired.
3. Game Flow
The game progresses with players taking their turns. When it is an Automaton's turn:
- Draw the top card of the Automa Deck and place it in the discard pile.
- Scope Determination: The card indicates how many unoccupied spaces (1 to 3) the Automaton can advance. Occupied spaces are ignored.
- Movement: The Automaton moves to the location within range that has the highest priority (in case of a tie, the closest one).
- Location Advantage: Apply the specific benefit of the space where the Automaton stopped (Temple, Inn, or other locations).
Meal cards are not revealed until all travelers arrive at an Inn.
4. Actions and How to Play
The Automata do not pay coins. Their actions are resolved as follows:
- Temple: The Automaton places 2 coins from the reserve into its temple area and scores 2 points.
- Inn: The Automaton does not buy a meal until all travelers arrive at the location. When everyone arrives, meals are drawn and distributed (the Automaton receives the cheapest one available, at no cost, and gains 6 points).
- Other Locations: The Automaton receives 1 corresponding object. Instead of the normal benefit, it gains 1 point for each item (level) it already possesses of that type.
- Object Collection: If the Automaton receives an object it already possesses, it places it at the top of the corresponding column. If it is a new type, it starts a new column to the left.
To determine movement, use the location priority: the Temple and the Inn have lower priority, except when their icons appear on the current Automa card, making them a priority.
5. End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when all travelers complete the journey. The final scoring follows the normal rules, with the following exceptions:
- Collector's Achievement: Each souvenir card of an Automaton counts as 2.
- Inn: During assembly, the Automaton scores 3 points for each additional coin received.
- Panoramas: The Automata continue receiving Panorama cards even after completing the section limit.
Consult the manual for details on this section regarding the specific point counting for each card category.
6. Tips for Winning
- Difficulty Management: Use the Difficulty Levels (1 to 7) to adjust the challenge according to your experience, remembering that in levels 5 to 7, the Automata perform extra actions based on the difficulty cards.
- Attention to Priorities: Note that the Automaton prioritizes locations based on the number of objects it already possesses. Try to anticipate which locations it will move to by observing the range indicated on the Automa card and the priority of the spaces.
