Game Objective
Hey everyone! Ready for a quick challenge full of bluffs? In Trio, the objective is simple, but the journey is full of twists: be the first to form the right trios before your opponents. A trio is, as the name suggests, a set of 3 identical cards. But not just any trio will lead you to victory, mind you! Depending on the game mode, you'll have different goals to achieve glory!
- Simple Mode: You need to be the first to get 3 trios of any kind. Or, if you're a daring player, you can try for an instant win with the trio 7!
- Spicy Mode: Here things heat up! You need 2 connected trios. Connected numbers are indicated in the bottom corners of the cards. For example, if you get trios 2 and 5, or 2 and 9, victory is yours! And, of course, the trio 7 still gives you an immediate win.
Setup
Let's set up the table for the fun to begin! It'll be quick, I promise:
- First, take all 36 cards and give them a good shuffle.
- Now, deal the cards face down to each player, according to the table below:
- 3 players: 9 cards per player
- 4 players: 7 cards per player
- 5 players: 6 cards per player
- 6 players: 5 cards per player
- The remaining cards that were not dealt go to the center of the table, face down, forming a pile. The quantity varies with the number of players:
- 3 players: 9 cards in the center
- 4 players: 8 cards in the center
- 5 players: 6 cards in the center
- 6 players: 6 cards in the center
- Each player takes their cards, gathers them in their hand, and arranges them in ascending order (from smallest to largest), without showing anyone. This is crucial!
- Finally, decide together whether you will play in SIMPLE or SPICY mode.
- The person who most recently ate an avocado (yes, that's the rule!) starts the game, and play proceeds clockwise.
Team Variant (Only with 4 or 6 players)
If the group is large and you want to play in teams, follow these adjustments:
- Form teams of 2 players. With 4 players, there will be two teams; with 6, there will be three. Sit opposite your partner, not side by side.
- Shuffle and deal all cards face down. No cards go to the center of the table in this variant.
- After arranging your cards in hand, you can exchange one card with your partner. Do this secretly and simultaneously. Card exchange is the only form of communication allowed between partners! No signals, no kicks under the table, no showing where the card ended up in the other's hand!
The Game Turn
On their turn, the player has a mission: reveal cards, one by one, until they find a trio or until the sequence is broken. You must stop as soon as two numbers are different. If you continue, it's because you're looking for three identical numbers!
To reveal a card, you have two options:
- From the center of the table: You can choose and reveal any face-down card from the central pile.
- From a player's hand (including your own): Here's the trick! You can ask to reveal the lowest or highest card from your own hand, or from an opponent's hand.
- If it's from your own hand, you must reveal the card at the end (the smallest or the largest).
- If it's from an opponent's hand, you choose whether they should reveal the highest or lowest card from their hand.
- Even if the player has multiple copies of the lowest or highest number, they only reveal one card (always the one at the end).
- The revealed card is placed on the table.
Your turn ends in one of these ways:
- You complete a trio! Congratulations! Take the 3 revealed cards and place them in front of you. Now it's the next player's turn.
- A revealed number is different from the previous one. Oops! The sequence was broken. All revealed cards are returned to their original places: face down in the center of the table or back to their owners' hands. Now it's the next player's turn.
IMPORTANT:
- You can perform the same action multiple times on your turn. For example, ask the same opponent to reveal the highest number, and then ask again for the highest number among their remaining cards.
- Even when you reveal a card from your own hand, it must always be the highest or lowest number (never a card from the middle of your hand).
- If a player has no more cards in hand when it's their turn, they continue playing using the cards from the center of the table and opponents' hands.
In Team Mode:
- Every time a team wins a trio, opposing teams can perform a new card exchange between their partners.
- The 2 partners share the trios they win, placing them together in front of one of the team's players.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends as soon as a player (or a team, in the variant) meets the victory condition!
- Simple Mode: The player who gets 3 trios of any kind wins.
- Spicy Mode: The player who gets 2 connected trios (according to the numbers in the corners of the cards) wins.
- In both modes, if a player gets the trio 7, they win the game immediately, no matter how many trios the others have!
Tips for Winning
- Observe and Memorize: Pay attention to the cards that are revealed and, more importantly, those that are returned. Knowing where the cards are (or where they returned to) is a huge advantage for planning your next moves and completing your trios.
- Bluff Wisely: Asking for an opponent's highest or lowest card isn't always to complete your trio. Sometimes, it's to see what they have, or to force them to reveal a number that you know will break their sequence. Use this to your advantage!
- The Trio 7 is the Wildcard: Never underestimate the power of the trio 7. If you have a chance to go for it, even if it seems risky, it could be the move that gives you an instant win and catches everyone by surprise!
