Game Objective
In Wingspan: European Expansion, you take on the role of a wildlife enthusiast trying to attract the most beautiful and varied birds of the European continent to your sanctuary. The goal is to build a diverse bird ecosystem to accumulate the highest number of points possible.
Victory is determined by the total score at the end of the game, based on the presence of birds, eggs, food, and the fulfillment of specific objectives.
Setup
To set up the game, follow these steps:
- Bird Cards: Shuffle the 81 new bird cards from the expansion with all other bird cards from the base game.
- Bonus Cards: Shuffle the new bonus cards with the original bonus cards.
- Support Components: Mix the 15 purple eggs, the extra food tokens, and the round end goal tiles.
- Board: Place the reference tile next to the goal board. It is recommended to use the green side of the goal board for this expansion.
- Rule Reminder: All action cubes must remain in the row where they were used until the end of round scoring, as some new powers depend on them.
Gameplay Flow
The game is divided into rounds. Each round follows a turn structure where players perform their actions. After all players complete their turns, the end of round occurs.
The end of round follows this order:
- Activate end of round bird powers (teal color). These powers are performed in player order, starting with the player who initiated the round. If a player has more than one bird with this power, they can perform them in any order.
- Score the round end goals.
- Remove the action cubes.
- Discard and refill the bird tray.
- Rotate the first player marker.
Actions and How to Play
Players can perform actions to build their sanctuary. The expansion introduces new types of powers that interact with these actions:
Types of Bird Powers
- When Activated (Brown): Powers that occur when you perform an action in a specific habitat.
- End of Round (Teal): Powers that occur after all turns in the round, but before scoring.
- Once Between Turns (Pink): Powers that can only be activated once per round.
- When Played: Powers that are activated the moment the card is placed on the board.
Actions and Special Mechanics
- Gain Food: In addition to the base action, some birds have powers to reset the bird feeder or steal food from other players.
- Lay Eggs: Some birds have powers to lay eggs on other birds or on themselves.
- Draw Cards: There are mechanics to draw cards from the bird tray or the deck, including the possibility of "tucking" cards under birds to gain points or activate powers.
- Flocking Powers: Some birds allow you to tuck cards from your hand under other birds in the same habitat.
- Hunting and Fishing Powers: Some birds allow you to pay part of the food cost using cards from your hand (which are "tucked" under the bird) or allow you to play a bird on top of another, discarding the eggs of the original bird.
- Space Occupation Powers: Some birds (like the Long-tailed Tit) can be placed sideways to occupy 2 spaces in the same habitat.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when the end-game trigger is met (according to the base game rules). Scoring is calculated by summing the following criteria:
- Round End Goals: Points gained or lost according to the criteria established for that specific round.
- Bonus Cards: Points for criteria such as eggs, food on cards, or tucked cards.
- Bird Cards: Points for the value printed on the birds.
- Tucked Cards: Cards placed under birds to pay costs or for specific powers.
