About the game
Woodlanders brings the forest back to the table with a card game that blends humor, strategy, and a touch of chaos. Three or four players gather to decide who will be the next “Warden” – the forest’s guardian – and, as usual, no one wants to take on the responsibility. Each species (badgers, deer, foxes, owls, and rabbits) has a representative, and they all refuse the role until only one remains. The goal is simple: win the rounds (tricks) and rack up points, but the way the trump is set gives the game a unique flavor.

In each round, players choose the suit they don’t want to be trump. That suit also becomes the “pain suit,” the card that triggers penalties. The deck has five suits, each containing four 1s, three 2s, two 3s, and one 4. You may play one or two cards of the same suit in a trick, but a 4 must be played solo. Whoever wins the trick takes all the cards played and scores one point per card, except when the pain suit appears: then the player only collects the pain‑suit cards and receives –1 point per card.

The trick‑taking mechanic with a pain suit creates interesting tactical decisions: you might try to win the trick with strong cards, but if the pain suit shows up, the point you earn turns into a loss. Thus, there’s a balance between aggression and caution. The game is quick, with playtimes of 20 to 40 minutes, and the rule of picking the suit you don’t want to be trump adds a surprise element that keeps everyone on their toes. The components are simple – just cards and score markers – but the forest theme and charming characters give it an extra flair that appeals to players of all ages.
