Game Objective

The zombie plague, created and spread by the Defiler Necromancers and their minions, has already engulfed most of the Eternal Empire. This contamination is not only physical but also spiritual, transforming mythical beasts, spirits, and even celestial avatars into terrifying and furious monsters. However, death leads to rebirth, and new generations of heroes emerge, inspired by courage and a sense of unity, to combat this threat.

The overall objective of the game is to survive and eliminate the zombie threats and abominations that plague the Eternal Empire. The specific victory condition will depend on the Mission being played, but generally involves eliminating certain Abominations or Necromancers, or fulfilling specific Mission objectives.

Setup

To add new Abominations and Necromancers to the game, simply add the corresponding cards to their respective decks during setup. The Wintergrad Clothes Vault Weapons (Fur, Gloves, Hat, and Shoes) are Kickstarter Exclusive Vault Weapons and should be shuffled into the Vault Weapon deck during setup.

The Kickstarter Exclusive Survivor: Rebecca can be chosen to play. The player can choose any Skill from White Death or Eternal Empire for Rebecca at the Blue Level. If the chosen Skill has brackets (such as +1 Free Action [Action], for example), the player chooses the corresponding keyword.

Refer to the manual for details on this section.

Game Flow

The game progresses in Game Rounds. Some Abominations and Necromancers affect the game flow:

  • Kumiho: While Kumiho is on the board, the Player Phase is played randomly. Roll a die for each player who has not yet played their Turn. The player with the highest roll plays their Turn. Reroll in case of a tie. Continue until each player has played their Turn.
  • Yuki-Onna: At the start of each Game Round, each Survivor who has Line of Sight to the Yuki-Onna receives 1 Freeze Token on their Survivor Dashboard. A Survivor with a Freeze Token loses 1 Action at the start of their next Turn. Then, discard the Freeze Token.
  • Death Notes: Produce 3 Noise Tokens at the start of each Game Round.
  • Bake-danuki: At the start of the Player Phase, roll a die. Until the end of the Round, Bake-danuki is considered as: 1-2: an Abomination, 3: a Runner, 4: a Brute, 5-6: a Walker.
  • Zhu Bajie: At the start of each Zombie Phase, all other Zombies in its Zone gain 1 extra Activation.

Refer to the manual for details on this section.

Actions and How to Play

Abominations and Necromancers have special rules that affect actions and gameplay:

Abominations

  • Actions: 1
  • Wounds Caused: 1
  • To Eliminate: 3 Damage, Cauldron, or Dragon Fire.
  • Adrenaline Provided: 5 points.
  • Special Rules:
    • Wounds inflicted by Abominations cannot be prevented by Armor rolls.
    • A weapon with 3 Damage is required to kill an Abomination. No weapon in White Death has a natural 3 Damage value. This can be achieved with Skills (such as +1) or special Mission rules. Dragon Fire or Cauldrons can also kill an Abomination.
    • Only in White Death: When eliminated, place a random Vault Weapon (if any are available), face down, in the Abomination's Zone. Any Survivor in this Zone can spend an Action to pick up the Vault Weapon. Then, they can reorganize their inventory for free.
    • Only in White Death: Abominations ignore walls and do not need Ladders to climb onto or off Battlements.

Specific Abomination Types:

  • Amaterasu: Can only spawn once per game. While she is on the board, the maximum Range of all weapons is limited to 1. When eliminated, the maximum Range of all Combat Spells and Range weapons gains +1 until the end of the game.
  • Asura: Roll a die whenever an Asura spawns. The result is the minimum Damage required to eliminate it.
  • Bishamon: While Bishamon is on the board, Survivors cannot gain new Vault Weapons. They can still use those they already possess. When eliminated, place 1D6 random Vault Weapons (if any are available), face down, in Bishamon's Zone. Any Survivor in this Zone can spend an Action to pick up 1 Vault Weapon. Then, they can reorganize their inventory for free.
  • Chimimoryö: When eliminated, Chimimoryö immediately reappears in the nearest Necromancer or Defiler Spawn Zone (if none are available, Chimimoryö does not reappear). If multiple Necromancer Spawn Zones are at the same distance, players choose.
  • Hachiman: Can only spawn once per game. While Hachiman is on the board, all Zombies attack twice whenever they attack.
  • Qilin: The player whose Survivor eliminated the Qilin immediately chooses a Zone on the board. All Zombies in the designated Zone are also eliminated. The Survivor gains all corresponding AP.
  • Nian: Requires 4 Damage to be eliminated, minus 1 per Noise Token on the board, with a minimum of 1. Cauldrons and Dragon Fire work normally. (Note: Survivors do not count towards the total. Only actual Noise Tokens count!)
  • Kijin: Has 2 Actions per Activation. Can draw Lines of Sight over buildings and Hedges (Green Horde) to Zones beyond them. Similarly, Actors in those Zones can draw Lines of Sight to the Kijin. Can perform Attacks in its target Zone if within Range 0-1 and within Line of Sight. All Survivors in the target Zone suffer the Attack. While the Kijin is on the board, each Survivor loses 1 Action (min. 0) at the start of their Turn.
  • Red Hare: Can only spawn once per game. Each time the Red Hare performs a Movement, it moves 2 Zones instead of 1. The destination Zone is set before the Movement and does not change along the way.
  • Shaköki Dogü: Cannot be eliminated unless it is the only Zombie in its Zone (this also applies to game effects that eliminate all Zombies in the target Zone, such as Cauldron or Dragon Fire). After each Zombie spawn on the board (except Abominations and Necromancers), place a Zombie of the same type in Shaköki Dogü's Zone.
  • Susano-wo: While Susano-wo is on the board, the Accuracy value of all Range weapons is considered 6.
  • Takemikazuchi: Survivors cannot enter Takemikazuchi's Zone. Each Survivor in a Zone where Takemikazuchi enters, immediately resolves 1 Movement to leave this Zone, ignoring Zombies in the starting Zone. These free Movements are resolved in any order chosen by the players.
  • Sōjōbō: Has 2 Actions per Activation. Can draw Lines of Sight over buildings and Hedges (Green Horde) to Zones beyond them. Similarly, Actors in those Zones can draw Lines of Sight to Sōjōbō. Can perform Attacks in its target Zone within Range 0-1 and within Line of Sight. All Survivors in the target Zone suffer the Attack. Can only be defeated by a Survivor with a Vault Weapon in their inventory.
  • Toyol: Has 3 Actions per Activation. For each Wound it would inflict, Toyol steals 1 random Equipment card from the target Survivor's inventory. Place these stolen cards near the board, in a pile.
  • Yeti: No Line of Sight can be drawn to the Yeti unless a Survivor is within Range 0-1 of it.

Necromancers

  • Wounds Caused: 1
  • To Eliminate: 1 Damage
  • Adrenaline Provided: 1 point.
  • Special Rules:
    • Necromancers are Zombies for game purposes.
    • Only in White Death: Whenever a Necromancer is eliminated, place a random Vault Weapon (if any are available), face down, in its Zone. Any Survivor in this Zone can spend an Action to pick up the Vault Weapon. Then, they can reorganize their inventory for free.

Specific Necromancer Types:

  • Bomoh: Roll a die after eliminating the Bomoh (rewards are still gained): 1-5: Nothing happens. 6: The Bomoh immediately reappears in the Starting Spawn Zone.
  • Death Notes: Produce 3 Noise Tokens at the start of each Game Round. While there is at least 1 Noise Token in Death Notes' Zone, each hit rolled when attacking Zombies in this Zone (including Death Notes themselves) is canceled, removing 1 Noise Token from this Zone instead (even if it wasn't produced by Death Notes in the first place). Game effects that kill all Zombies in the target Zone (Cauldron or Dragon Fire) are not affected by this rule.
  • Kaguya: Each time Kaguya activates, 1 Walker spawns in each Corruption Zone with 1 or more Survivors.
  • Hannya: Each miss rolled when attacking Zombies in Hannya's Zone (including Hannya itself) inflicts 1 Wound on the Survivor performing the attack. This rule applies to Combat Actions (Magic, Melee, or Range) and Siege Actions (Green Horde). Armor rolls are allowed.
  • Tengu: Has 2 Actions per Activation.

Daily Zombies

  • Kappa: Last in target priority. Kappa's attacks cause 3 Wounds. At the start of the Zombie Phase, a Survivor in Kappa's Zone can discard an Apple or Salted Meat card; if they do, Kappa does not activate during this Enemy Phase.
  • Yaksha: Yaksha's attacks cause 3 Wounds. When Yaksha is eliminated, the Survivor who eliminated it receives a Vault Weapon.
  • Rakshasa: Last in target priority. When Rakshasa attacks, all Survivors in its Zone suffer 2 Wounds.
  • Onryō (Runner): Always targets the Survivor with the most AP.
  • Meng Huo (Brute): When Meng Huo would be eliminated, place it in the first Spawn Zone.
  • Zhu Bajie (Brute): Cannot perform Movement Actions. At the start of each Zombie Phase, all other Zombies in its Zone gain 1 extra Activation.

Wintergrad Clothes Vault Weapons

Do not take up inventory space and grant the indicated Skill to the Survivor. They form their own set: a Survivor who possesses the complete set of 4 can use all their Red Level Skills, regardless of the amount of AP they possess and the current Danger Level.

  • Wintergrad Fur: ARMOR 5+, HO. SET 1/4. COMPLETE SET: Gain all your Red Skills. Can be used in the Backpack.
  • Wintergrad Gloves: +1 DIE: COMBAT. SET 2
