Dust off your captain's hat and take the helm! A Tale of Pirates is a high-energy cooperative experience where you and your crew navigate a 3D pirate ship. Your ultimate goal is to be crowned the 'Admiral of the Black', the most feared name in the Caribbean, by completing dangerous scenarios in record time. The game's most innovative twist is how it handles character actions: each player uses their own 30-second sand timer as their character piece on the ship.
Here is the catch: to perform an action—such as turning the ship, loading cannons, firing at enemies, or repairing damage—you place your sand timer in the corresponding slot on the ship's deck. You can only execute the action once the sand has completely run out. This creates a unique rhythmic flow where coordination is everything. While one player is waiting for their timer to finish to fire a shot, another must be preparing the turn, and everyone must communicate constantly to avoid disaster.
The game features ten diverse scenarios, ranging from standard piracy and treasure hunts to epic Kraken battles and daring prison breaks. To keep the adventure on track, a companion app (for smartphone or tablet) guides the players through the missions, handles random events, manages upgrades, and saves game states for later sessions. The app also acts as the master timer for the individual rounds, which typically last about five minutes each.
Despite the real-time pressure, the game manages to balance the stress. Because the 30-second delays act as forced pauses, the crew gets brief moments to catch their breath and strategize. It's a swift-playing game with simple rules, but it delivers an exciting and involving experience with great player interaction. If you enjoy organized chaos and teamwork under pressure, this ship is ready for you to board!
