About the game
What you do in a play session
Get ready for a nostalgic trip back in time with Battlegame Book 3: Galactic War! Released in 1975, this installment in the Battlegame Books series offers four space wargame scenarios that fit... in a book! Forget giant boards; here, the battlefield is printed on the pages, and the components are cardboard counters to cut out and assemble. It's the kind of thing that makes us appreciate modern components, but with undeniable charm.
The main game, Galactic War, puts you in command of the Galactic Federation against the Proxima Centauri Alliance. The goal is to expand your empire by capturing planets to upgrade your technology, all while dodging an erratic anti-matter cloud. Combat is intense, with fleets stretching across the map and the threat of 'annihilator' ships that detonate everything around them. Your ship types are kept secret from your opponent, adding a layer of mystery and tactics.
But that's not all! The book also includes three other games: Space Pirates, where you race to pick up cargo from asteroids and return it to Earth, carefully managing your ships' speeds; Deadly Planet, a mission to rescue stranded astronauts on a hostile planet teeming with dangerous creatures; and Invasion Earth, where you defend the planet against an alien invasion using orbital satellites and naval fleets.
With gameplay for 2 to 4 players and quick 30-minute sessions, Battlegame Book 3 is a piece of wargaming history, perfect for those who enjoy a strategic challenge with a retro flair and don't mind getting out the scissors.
