Step by step
Game Objective
In Devil Baby, players take on the roles of journalists trying to prove the existence of an urban legend: a child born with horns and a tail in the 1970s in São Paulo. The goal is to be the first to publish 2 newspaper editions (3 editions in 2-player games) with photographic evidence of the creature by moving pieces around the neighborhood and collecting clues.
Setup
- Choose a side of the neighborhood tiles (a or b) and assemble the board.
- Place the Photographer, Gossipers, and the Devil Baby on the indicated blocks.
- Separate and shuffle the cards by type (Photographer, Rumor, Headline). Deal one of each to every player.
- Place the 8 newspapers at the Newsstand and the Snapshot cards in a row, face down.
- Give each player a Reserve Marker and keep the Verification Markers and the Cross within reach.
Game Flow
Each turn, a player must:
- Draw a card from the deck.
- Choose an action:
- Discard cards to move pawns and perform actions.
- Exchange cards (if you have 3 of the same type).
- Pass the turn, moving your Reserve Marker.
The game continues until a player publishes the required editions or everyone loses due to running out of Verification Markers.
Actions and How to Play
Movement
- Use card numbers to move the Photographer and Gossipers (by adding/dividing values).
- The Devil Baby only moves with Rumor cards and orthogonally.
Card Types
- Rumor: Moves the Devil Baby in addition to other pawns.
- Headline: Publishes an edition (must be used directly from hand, without being used for movement).
- Photographer: Allows you to take a snapshot if the Photographer, Devil Baby, and a Gossiper are on the same block.
Snapshots
When revealing a Snapshot card:
- Devil Baby: Discard a Headline card to publish.
- Movement Icon: Move your Reserve Marker.
- Card Icon: Draw 2 cards.
- Cross: Place or move the Cross (blocks the Devil Baby).
- Marker Removal: Remove a Verification Marker.
Always place a Verification Marker on the block where the photo was taken.
End of Game and Scoring
The game ends when:
- A player publishes 2 editions (3 in 2-player games) and wins.
- The Verification Markers run out: everyone loses.
Variant
Play until all newspapers are taken. Add up the numbers on their backs (1, 2, or 3). The highest score wins (in case of a tie, the player with the most newspapers wins).
Tips to Win
- Use Rumor cards to control the Devil Baby's movement and make photos easier.
- Manage Verification Markers: freeing up spaces can be crucial.
- Prioritize Headline cards not used for movement to publish quickly.
