About the game

What you do in a play session

Black Sonata: Strange Shadows is a bundle of expansions that plug into the base game Black Sonata, offering fresh ways to hunt the elusive Dark Lady through the foggy streets of London. Each pack adds its own cards and rules, yet they can be played solo, together, or mixed with the earlier Fair Youth expansions.

The Darkest Ladies replaces the traditional Dark Lady deck with a suit‑less set, forcing players to deduce not only the symbols but also their exact order, raising the tension by removing colour and suit clues.

Indirections introduces two new stealth‑card types. Compass‑symbol cards reveal the direction the Dark Lady traveled from her last spot, while colour cards hint at the likely hue of her current location, providing subtler hints and demanding deeper deduction.

Blazonry hides the villain behind a heraldic shield. To reach her, investigators must decode the shield’s symbols using special fog cards, turning the chase into a symbol‑puzzle.

The Ferryman adds a river ferry as a shortcut: from any riverside location you can sail in one turn to another riverside spot, potentially outrunning the Dark Lady. The catch is that the ferryman shields the Lady, preventing searches on riverbanks, and you must collect location cards in a specific sequence.

Cat and Mouse offers an asymmetric two‑player mode where one player is the Dark Lady trying to flee, and the other is the Historian tracking and unmasking her.

Tarry cards let you temporarily pause the Dark Lady’s flight, but they impose a later cost, creating risk/reward decisions. Finally, four extra fog cards can be added to the fog deck to increase search opportunities, replace detrimental fog cards, or simply add variety to fog actions. The expansion remains light (weight 2.7) and fast (20‑40 minutes), perfect for short sessions or as a supplement to longer deduction games.
