About the game

What you do in a play session

On June 15, 1983, tension is palpable: NATO and the Red Banner Northern Fleet clash in a naval conflict that could decide the fate of Western Europe. Blue Water Navy: The War at Sea throws you directly into this hypothetical Cold War scenario, exploring a naval, air, and even space conflict stretching from Russia's Kola Peninsula to the Mediterranean and across the Atlantic to the US and Cuba. The game simulates a full 1980s wartime scenario, with everything one would expect, from Soviet Tu-22 Backfire bombers to multiple US carrier groups. The core mechanic revolves around cards, which serve to move units or trigger special events, such as 'KGB Assassinations' or 'Space Shuttle'. But it's not just on your turn: many cards can be used to react on the opponent's turn, with events like 'Raid Aborts' or 'Friendly Fire', adding a layer of unpredictability. Detection is the key: your task forces can only be attacked if detected, while land airbases are known targets. The race to find enemy fleets is intense, especially against formidable Soviet bomber formations or the stealthy Soviet submarine fleet, which, despite its considerable strength, needs help to effectively detect enemy forces. NATO not only needs to protect its convoys and allies like Norway and Denmark but also to halt Soviet forces in the Mediterranean with naval aviation strikes. In the deeper seas, the nuclear threat is real, with the possibility of attacks on Soviet nuclear deterrent submarines and potential retaliation. The game also incorporates a stability mechanism reflecting Soviet Politburo approval and the possibility of using 'First Strike Points' for chemical or nuclear weapons. Get ready for an immersive experience with spies, technological theft, satellites, B-52s, special forces, and Soviet spy trawlers. A true feast for wargame fans!
