About the game
Breakout: Normandy is a two-player wargame that plunges you into the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. The goal is simple yet the execution is a real test of strategy: the German player must prevent the Allies from establishing a beachhead, or, if that fails, contain the expansion along the coast. The Allied player must secure the beach and, better still, break through the enemy line. The game unfolds in area-impulse turns, using the same system found in Storm Over Arnhem and Turning Point: Stalingrad. Each move is resolved by dice, with advantage tokens representing tactics and resources that can swing the game at any moment. The map depicts the Normandy coast, with landing zones, terrestrial combat areas, and logistical support. Units are regiments and brigades of infantry, artillery, armored, airborne, anti-tank, and anti-aircraft. Complexity is high: 240 minutes of play, 3.4/5 weight on BGG, and 7.5 on Ludopedia. If you enjoy military simulation, large-scale tactical decisions, and a well-detailed historical scenario, Breakout: Normandy will hold your attention. The only caveat? The pace can be slow for those who dislike waiting for each impulse. But with patience, the game delivers an epic experience of commanding forces in one of WWII’s most decisive moments.
