Carcassonne: Towers & Thieves is the fourth major expansion of the classic Carcassonne series, adding intrigue and strategy beyond simple tile placement. The centerpiece is the towers: tower segments that can be placed on tiles with tower slots, onto existing towers, or even allow you to place a meeple on top, completing the tower. Each tower can be 1, 2, or 3 pieces high, and the higher it is, the farther it can capture opponent meeples in a straight orthogonal line. When you capture a meeple, you not only nullify its existing points but also force its owner to pay 3 victory points to free it, which can swing the game in your favor. The capture mechanic introduces a risk‑reward element unique to this expansion, requiring players to plan not only where to place tiles but also where to position towers to control the flow of meeples. The expansion keeps Carcassonne’s simplicity while adding strategic depth, especially in 4‑to‑6 player games where territory control competition intensifies. Components are well‑made: high‑quality tiles, sturdy plastic tower pieces, and wooden meeples that fit the medieval aesthetic. While the price is a bit higher than the base game, the added value in terms of new mechanics and replayability is substantial. If you’re familiar with Carcassonne and find the game a bit predictable, Towers & Thieves offers a fresh reinvention, keeping the same gentle learning curve and fun for both family and friends. It’s an expansion that blends perfectly with fans of city building and territory control, adding a battle element that gives extra charm to the classic.
