About the game
What you do in a play session
Catan: Traders & Barbarians arrives as the third major expansion for the classic Settlers of Catan, but in practice it works like a "bag of goodies". Instead of a single scenario, it bundles five distinct adventures and four optional variants that can be mixed and matched. Among them are "The Fishermen of Catan", adding new fishing pieces and extra maritime trade options; "The Great Rivers", which introduces two river chains of 4 and 3 hexes, boosting gold production along the waterways; "The Great Caravan", bringing longer trade routes and event cards that shift resource flow; "Barbarian Invasion", where newly‑added knights defend the coast against invaders, echoing the flood mechanic from the Atlantis scenario; and the titular "Traders & Barbarians" scenario, which adds castle, glass and marble hexes plus mission cards that award victory points when completed. The variants provide two‑player rules (using commercial chips that force trades), event cards that replace dice, a Harbormaster card rewarding the player with most harbor points, and friendly robber rules. All components are compatible with the Seafarers and Cities & Knights expansions, allowing combined or standalone play. The modular board ensures a fresh map each game, while auction, voting and memory mechanics add layers of negotiation and strategy. Perfect for players who have mastered the base game and crave more variety without overhauling the core experience, though the sheer amount of new rules calls for a careful read‑through before the first session.
